Group building involves forming a collection of individuals who work together towards common goals. The process of developing a group goes through 5 stages: forming, storming, norming, performing, and adjourning. Forming is when uncertainty is highest and members begin to see themselves as part of the group. Storming involves intragroup conflicts as members resist constraints but leadership emerges. During norming, close relationships and a strong group identity develop as members agree on goals and behavior. The group is fully functional during performing. Adjourning is the final stage for temporary groups as they wrap up activities.

- 2. WHAT IS GROUP? A collection of individuals who have regular contact and frequent interaction, mutual influence, and who work together to achieve a common set of goals.
- 3. HOW TO DEVELOP A GROUP? • Forming • Storming • Norming • Performing • Adjourning
- 4. FORMING • Characterized by a great deal of uncertainty about the group’s purpose, structure, and leadership. • It is completed when the members begin to think themselves as a part of the group.
- 5. STORMING • It is one of intragroup conflicts. • Members accept the existence but resist the constraints it imposes on individuality. • After this stage there will be a clear hierarchy of leadership within the group.
- 6. NORMING • Close relationship is developed and the group demonstrates cohesiveness. • Group cohesiveness arises when bonds link members of a social group to one another and to the group as a whole. • Develops a strong sense of group identity. • It completes when the group has a common set of goals and do correct member behavior.
- 7. PERFORMING • The group is fully functional • Group energy has moved to know understand each other to perform the works at hand. • It is the final stage for the permanent group.
- 8. ADJOURNING • It is the final stage for temporary groups developed to wrapping up activities rather than task performance. • It means managing the activities not performing the activities.
