INTRODUCTION:
Those rights attributed to a person seeking health care. In 1973 the American
Hospital Association approved a statement called the “Patient's Bill of Rights,”
regarding a patient's rights during hospitalization. (A revised document was
subsequently approved in 1992.) This was published with the expectation that
observance of patient's rights would contribute to more effective care and greater
satisfaction for the patient, health care providers, and the hospital organization in
general.
In general, the rights of a patient are concerned with the patient being fully
informed about his or her illness, the diagnostic and therapeutic measures anticipated,
and the written records of the care received.

Patient rights encompass legal and ethical issues in the
provider-patient relationship, including a person's right to privacy,
the right to quality. Medical care without prejudice’s the right to

PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKEN BY THE PATIENT
TO PROTECT THEIR RIGHTS:-
In case of surgical treatment or invasive procedures and
investigations, the details an Ike are understood by the
patient before they Sign in the Consent form.
At the time of discharge, make sure that they have been given
copies of all the relevant records.
At the time of discharge make sure that they have received
the bills for all the payments made by them. They have the
right to get details of drugs administered to them.

PRECAUTIONS
 Have the right to ask for second opinion.
 They should request the doctor in case of any
clarification of doubts regarding treatment.
 Make sure that the patient has been given all the
instructions for the medicines prescribed
 The patient should always preserve all the bills of
the purchase of every medicines

PRECAUTIONS
In case of any substandard drug, preserve the
drug packages with labels and the Complaint
have to be lodged with the local FDA.
If patient complaint remains unresolved, they
can write their grievance giving all details in a
Sequential format and it can be submitted to
Consumer Court.

NURSES ROLE IN SAFEGUARD PATIENTS RIGHTS
The basic or fundamental rights of a patient are:-
The right to obtain safe, and competent Care. The nurses as members
of the health team have an important role in protecting the patient
from unethical and incompetent Practices
The patient has the right to Considerate and respectful care.
The patient has the right to be adequately informed about the disease
that he is suffering from, the meaning of various investigations
carried out, the mode of treatment, and the prognosis.

The patient has to feel that his care and the well-being are in the
hands of competent people. So that no harm will occur
The patient has the right to privacy and confidentially of
information’s.
Any information collected about the patient either directly from the
patient or his relatives or from other sources, Should be kept in secret
and without the permission of the patient it should never be told to
anyone, even to his relatives.

The patient has the right to accept or to refuse the treatment.
The medical team (doctors, nurses, to technicians, para- medical
staff etc.) requires written Consent from the patient or his
relatives to ensure that the patient has agreed legally to undergo
operations and certain investigations, particularly those
procedures that are carried out under general anesthesia. The
patient only be consenting to that which he clearly understands
what is being done its benefits and the possible risks.

The patient has the right to refuse or participate in the
performances of human experimentations affecting his affecting
his care and treatment.
The patient has the right to practice his own religion.
The patient has the right to obtain the help of the ministers of his
religion at the time of emergency.
The patient has the right to expect reasonable Continuity of
Care.
