- 4. Introduction Oliver Goldsmith’s “She stoops to conquer” (1773) is a comedy based on a misunderstanding. It is one of the famous plays written by Oliver Goldsmith. It is also known as “The mistakes of a night” because the events within the play take in one unfortunate night.
- 5. The significance of the title Marlow is a shy young man who goes with a friend to visit the Hardcastle family because their parents hope that he and Miss Hardcastle will marry. But as he could not talk with the higher class ladies many unfortunate things happen. And that’s why to solve the problem Miss Hardcastle tried to conquer Marlow by acted as a barmaid. She took the challenge and played it really clever. As a result she conquered Marlow with her efforts. And that’s why the title is “She Stoops To Conquer”.
