Search 100m2 of suspected land in 20 minutes, what would take a manual deminer 2 full days; What trained rats can do ? Screen 40 sputum samples for TB in 7 minutes, what would take a lab technician 1 full day. Editor's Notes

  • #18: Limiting factor is lab technicians preparing samples - presenting prepared slides for second-line screening - presenting samples that have not been autoclaved
  • #19: The need for know reinforcer samples. Reinforcement ratio is important. Possible 1 indication > confirmation by led microscopy > use as reinforcer sample for consequent rats To determine how many reinforcement samples are needed to sustain accurate performance To determine how many samples a single rat can evaluate without reinforcement before its accuracy declines. To determine how frequently a given rat can evaluate samples without reinforcement before its accuracy declines. To determine the number of samples a single rat must evaluate to provide sufficient reinforcement samples for other rats at different TB prevalence levels. To determine whether evaluation by a second rat, rather than by LED microscopy, can be used to verify samples as positive.
  • #20: Can APOPO Develop a Practical and Effective Automated Training and Testing Cage for TB-detecting Pouched Rats?
