    RESEARCH & PLANNING

         CENTRE NO: 11049

ST FRANCIS XAVIER COLLEGE
My name is: Natalie Bennett

       Candidate No: 2061
Preliminary Project – Research & Planning
 How did you think about target audience?
For this task we were told that we was making a student magazine for
college students so I automatically knew that the target audience would
be college students.
 How did awareness of that audience impact upon your
visual design and choice of language?
Because I am a college student myself, I was able to think in the same
mind-set as other students. I knew that my image had to be a picture of
college students so that my audience could relate to it. I didn’t change
the language so much.
 What key points did you learn about Adobe Photoshop
and InDesign in constructing your artefacts?
I learnt how to make layers, swatches. How to move images and where
to position my coverlines on Photoshop. On InDesign, I learnt to use
gridlines and baselines when writing texts or in this case my contents
page numbers
Presentation slides for_research_planning_evaluation 2
 What would you do differently next
   time?
I will manage my time better so that
everything is done so that I can move on
quickly to the next task. I will also take better
images of what I might want on my contents
page or my main image for my magazine. I
will also learn to use other tools that I may not
have used on my previous task to use on
future ones.
 What kind of feedback did you get
   that might influence you?
From my feedback, I learned that I need to
learn to use the programmes better and also
that my colour scheme needed to be
changed.
 What aspects of your understanding
of Adobe Photoshop & InDesign do
   you need to improve?
I need to improve on scaling images, moving
images from Photoshop onto
InDesign, improve on making layers and how
to move them around on my image.
The music genre of my music magazine
                                  is:
 Genre: Electronic/Dubstep
 My chosen title is Turntablez because it is a piece of
equipment that is used to make Dubstep music and relates
    to the genre.
 Model 1  Model 2

            http://dubstepbeats.org/
 Cover Design  Cover Lines
The cover design The coverlines
I found was that consist of
the colours were music, up and
bright, neon coming club
colours. parties, artists, et
                    c.

The setting was
in a club, where
Dubstep music is
most played.

What I learnt from this was very helpful to my
understanding of Dubstep music magazine and gave me
new ideas and inspirations to my Dubstep music magazine.
For my music magazine….
 Target Audience:
My Target audience is teenagers ranging from 16+
 Frequency:
Monthly
 Cover price:
My price of the magazine is £1.99
 Publisher:
Development Hell Ltd
 Unique Selling Point:
 This is how
                  it works
 Front cover The main coverline,
                 font is size is larger
                 than the rest, so it
                 stands out as the main
                 story and make sit
clear that it is the main
                 article.

                 The Masthead is a font
                 that relates to the
                 genre that I picked for
                 my magazine from
                 what I found out from
                 my research.
Here are the 4 original photographs I
             shot for the project……
I modified each photograph; here is the
original next to the final version:
 Raw 1  Final 1

 Here is how I changed the photograph and
    why
On Photoshop, I used the polygonal lasso tool, so I was able to
get rid of the background of the image so it could fit on my
magazine cover better.
And the second one:
 Raw 2  Final 2

 Here is how I changed the photograph and
  why
And the third one:
 Raw 3  Final 3

 Here is how I changed the photograph and
  why
And the last one:
 Raw 4  Final 4

 Here is how I changed the photograph anf
  why
Presentation slides for_research_planning_evaluation 2
 Contents  These are key
  Page features…
             I have written an “editor’s
             says…” on the contents
             page which interacts with the
             audience and also lets the
             editor get what she/he what
             she wants to tell the
             audience.
It links with the colour scheme as I
wanted to keep it consistent.
I also kept the same coverlines, but
made it clear under what heading
these coverlines go under.
I used the same font for the
headings as I did for the Masthead.

I did this because I believe that it is
neater and also that doesn’t
confuse the reader and not look
like it is rushed.
I made the coverlines relate to the target
audience and made them sound interesting that
           may draw in the reader.
Well they both have page numbers so you
know where to go, they also illustrate what
the coverline is about and also that it is made
               to clear to the audience.
I came up with the main coverline being about
artists because I though that topic would be
interesting for me to cover, as that is what music
is about, making new artists. I liked the other
coverlines that I made, but I was most excited to
                    do this one.
Well I made the coverline have its own heading
as that is the main story, I thought that making
the mixtape the second coverline because it
came after the main article on new artists so it
could be said that they link to one another as the
mixtape could include the artist that I spoke about
                 in my main story.
 Well it is outlined clearly
  that that my main
  coverline on the contents
page is at the top of the
  page under its own
  heading, which is also
  highlighted in the
  research I did about
  contents page.
Presentation slides for_research_planning_evaluation 2
 I feel that this double page
spread works as it is clear that
  it doesn’t challenge any codes
  and conventions, so it is
  straight forward and you know
what is to be expected in the
  article/interview.
Presentation slides for_research_planning_evaluation 2
 Well I used the same colour
  scheme again, to keep it
  consistent. I wrote an interview
for my double page spread and I
put the image on the right
side, facing the text, this could
  symbolise the model in the
  image looking at the
interview, facing it. There is also
speech marks on the image frim
  what the interviewee said, a
convention that I found in my
  research, and also putting the
email of the interviewer, which I
  also found in my research.
 They all have the same colour
  scheme, black, orange and
  red.
 All the images relate to the
type of genre that I did
 They all emphasise what the
  main coverline/article
 They all convey what the
  whole music magazine is
  about.
 Cover Page  Key
                 modifications
                 from feedback
               That the main
               coverline should be at
               the bottom and in a
               big font as compared
               to the others.
               The image on the right
               side and the text on
               the left, showing the
               use of columns
 Contents  Key
  Page modifications
                 from feedback
 All the text on the right
                 side and all the images
                 on the left, again
                 showing the use of
                 columns
              Put headings in a
                 position that is
                 noticeable so the reader
                 will understand the text
 Make it clear what page
                 the numbers that the
                 articles are on
Presentation slides for_research_planning_evaluation 2
 Use columns, to separate
the text and not make it
  difficult for the reader
 Put quotes in your article
 Make sure the image
  links to the article
