Chlorine is a greenish-yellow, nonmetallic element with an atomic number of 17 that was discovered in 1774 by Carl Wihelm Scheele in Uppsala, Sweden. It has a boiling point of -34.6 degrees C, melting point of -100.98 degrees C, and exists as isotopes Cl 35, 36, 37, 38. While it forms many useful compounds, chlorine gas is toxic even in low concentrations and attacks the eyes, throat and lungs.
