What is IOT ?
• The Internet of Things (IoT) is the network of physical objects or "things" embedded with electronics, software, sensors, and network
connectivity, which enables these objects to collect and exchange data.
• IOT allows objects to be sensed and controlled remotely across existing network infrastructure, creating opportunities for more direct
integration between the physical world and computer-based systems, and resulting in improved efficiency, accuracy and economic
benefit.
• "Things" will be a wide variety of devices such as implants, biochip transponders, electric clams in coastal waters, automobiles sensors, or
field operation devices. These "Things" will collect useful data with the help of various existing technologies and then autonomously flow
the data between other devices.
• IoT is expected to generate large amounts of data from diverse locations that is aggregated very quickly, thereby increasing the need to
better index, store and process such data. This data will give fresh unchartered opportunity for Business Intelligence.
• Simply put -> Electronic devices communicating meaningful data (that becomes Information) via Internet.
Market Segments of IOT

Connected Devices, Connected People… Connected World #HIPL
HIPL Team - Delhi Marathon
HIPL team wore fitbits and carried
smartphones as a means of tracking
progress.
The connected devices allowed the team
to track progress. And store historically.
Analysis included total distance covered
as well as speed and calories burnt.
More evolved devices allow for real time
health tracking. This can be used as alert
device to trigger emergency services.
Team HIPL also shared this as a Social
event. Facebook, Instagram are now
abuzz about #HIPL
Future enhancements will enable these
devices to add robust and
comprehensive Health care systems.

Smart Cities of the World
New York City: the forefront of adopting Smart city technology.
City 24/7, an interactive platform that integrates information from
government programs, local businesses, and the city’s citizens to
provide knowledge to anyone, anywhere, anytime, and on any device.
Hudson Yards project : $20 billion, 28-acre commercial and residential
area in Manhattan. Digitally track environmental and factors like traffic,
energy consumption, and air quality. It will include a Smart trash-
disposal system with via underground pneumatic tubes. It is being
designed specifically for millennials, and to provide the highest quality
of life for those living, working, and visiting the area.
Accelerated Conservation and Efficiency (ACE) program. ACE has
allocated nearly $140 million in funds to fifteen City agencies, for over
80 energy efficiency projects in more than 400 buildings. These
projects are slated to reduce the City’s emissions by approximately
50,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas equivalent (MT CO2e), and
provide the City with cost savings of over $25 million per year.
Oracle NYCStat management tool that enables local authorities to not
only monitor the relative success of government programs, assets and
channels, but relate individual and program performance measures to
larger policy objectives such as reducing operational costs, decreasing
crime, measuring the value of infrastructure investments in roads,
sewer systems, public education, social safety nets, and developing a
sustainable workforce.
World City Partnerships
'Open Agile Smart City' initiative.
Called the FiWare Project. 31 cities in 7 countries.
Today: 70 cities in 15 countries. Mostly EU and SA.
The FIWARE platform provides powerful set of Open source
APIs to develop Smart Applications in multiple vertical
sectors.
USA Urban Sustainability Directors Network (USDN) has
12 members:
Boston; Boulder; Burlington; Chicago; Columbia; Houston;
Palo Alto; Raleigh; San Francisco; Seattle; Vancouver and
Washington, D.C.
Seattle: Seattle City Light program. Sustainable Seattle High-Performance Building program (Microsoft)
San Jose: Intel’s first smart city implementation. Real-time data on air & noise pollution and traffic flow
India
Palava city by Lodha: will span 4,000 acres, and cost Rs.14,000 crore.
Smart Environment using solar powered street lights. Partnership with GE for SMART Water.
Potential to create 3,50,000 jobs.
Similar projects in Maharashtra and Gujarat.
