In what way does your
media product use, develop
or challenge forms and
conventions of real media
products?
What Media platforms
have we used?
When
  presenting
  our
  film,
  the
  platforms
  that

have
  we
  have
  used
  are

•

What types of conventions
are there in film media?
•  Conventions
  =
  An
  established
  way
  of
  doing

something

•  Generic Conventions =
  conventions
  which
  we

associate
  with
  a
  particular
  genre

•  Filming conventions =
  conventions
  which
  we

associate
  with

•  Magazine Conventions=

Generic Conventions of a
real media product

•  Example:
  Filming conventions
Credits,
  shot
  sizes
  e.g.
  close
  up
  camera
  angles,
  technical

codes
  (lighting
  and
  music).

Audiences
  recognize
  these
  features
  and
  expect
  certain

things.
  For
  example,
  at
  the
  end
  of
  a
  romantic
  comedy

film
  the
  two
  lead
  characters
  will
  realise
  they
  are
  in
  love.
•  Example:
  Magazine Conventions
Empire
  Magazine
  for
  example
  –
  we
  would
  expect
  to
  see

images,
  shock
  headlines,
  bold
  writing,
  brief
  reviews
  and

Forms and conventions of
our film:
•  Technical-‐
  Camera

  used
  in
  a
  teen
  drama

  are

often
  close
  up
  to
  build
  tension.

We
  used:
  lot
  of
  wide
  shots
  to
  capture
  the
  environment
  of

the
  scenes
  (i.e.
  peer
  pressure
  of
  groups).

•  Symbolic
  –
  we
  used
  the
  typical
  narrative
  of
  the
  popular

teen
  rejecting
  the
  ‘loser’
  but
  also
  had
  this
  over

Facebook
  to
  show
  the
  modern
  era
  we
  are
  in.

•  Verbal
  –
  We
  used
  modern
  day
  slang
  and
  abbreviations

to
  show
  the
  age

  and
  the

Genre: Conventions for a
teen dramaThe
  types
  of
  conventions
  you
  get
  in
  a
  teen
  drama
  are:
  Types of
Cliques
•
  Jock/
  Cheerleaders

•  Geeks/
  Nerds

•  Emos/
  Goths

•  Loners

•  Stoners

•  Popular
  for
  being
  popular

•  The
  artsy
  people
  e.g.
  artists,
  actors

For
  our
  film
  we
  did
  not
  use
  most
  of
  these
  conventions
  but
  we

did
  use
  the
  convention
  of
  the
  popular
  teens
  and
  the
  geeky

nerdy
  teen
  who
  is
  shunned
  by
  the
  group.

Our decision to challenge the
teen drama conventions
The
  ending
  –
  the
  main
  character
  ends
  up
  alone

rather
  than
  with
  the
  geeky
  guy
  that
  she
  likes

because
  he
  found
  someone
  else.

Examples of Teen Dramas
Defying Conventions
•  Mean Girls –
  very
  stereotypical
  in
  characters
  but

defies
  the
  rom
  com
  part
  of
  teen
  dramas.
  Very

successful
  film.

•  The Fault in Our Stars –
  this
  film
  uses
  the

convention
  of
  young
  love
  but
  the
  main
  character

dies.
  No
  happy
  ending.
  Incredibly
  successful.

•  Scary Movie –
  This
  branches
  into
  the
  sub
  genre
  of

teen-‐horror
  so
  challenges
  the
  typical
  teen
  drama

convention.

Our use of conventions
•  Inspired
  by
  –
  Wild
  Child
  and
  Mean
  Girls

  because
  of
  how
  engaging
  the

films
  were
  even
  though
  parts
  were
  very
  predictable.

•  We
  developed
  the
  following
  conventions:

•
  “popular
  girls”
  -‐we
  improved
  this
  by
  having
  the
  main
  girl
  not
  being
  a

mean
  girl.

•
  Stereotype
  of
  the
  geeky
  boy
  –
  we
  developed
  this
  by
  him
  getting
  a
  new

girlfriend

•  Peer
  pressure
  –
  extended
  this
  by
  having
  the
  main
  character
  ditch
  the

popular
  boyfriend

•  The
  protagonists
  moment
  of
  realization
  –
  (when
  she
  realizes
  she
  likes

geek)
  –
  we
  made
  more
  prevalent
  by
  having
  the
  actress
  “stalk”
  him
  on

Facebook.
