Q2: HOW
EFFECTIVE IS
THE
COMBINATION OF
YOUR MAIN
PRODUCT AND
ANCILLARY TASK?
In the brief for my advanced portfolio we had been asked to create a
promotional package for a new released film, in it consisting a teaser
trailer, film poster and magazine cover. I believe that all of our products
work well in complimenting each other due to uniformly using the same
colour schemes and font types for both the film poster and magazine; this
way it will help the audience relate more to the trailer as we didn’t change
the look of the film title or the colours that associate with the production.
“Candidates must produce a promotional package for a new
film, to include a teaser trailer, together with two of the
following three options; a website homepage for the film, a film
magazine front cover, featuring the film and a poster for the
film”
While the magazine cover only represents the
female protagonist, I believe it will help draw
in a wider audience as people would be
intrigues to why her facial expression is shot
like that but also the reason behind the
bruises on the face. One magazine front cover
that I had looked at was from the ‘Total Film’
publication, promoting the Gravity film.
Without having seen the trailer beforehand, I
was able to predict what the main story line
was about, due to the colour schemes of dark
blue with white speckles and the font type
suggest that it was based on the theme of
space and slight action
With the influence from other magazine
publications such as ‘Empire Magazine’ we
decided to produce something that mainly
focuses on the protagonist therefore having a
medium close up with a harsh light focusing on
one side of the face, accenting out the bruised
portion of the cheek. Holly’s facial expression
is directly looking at the reader on the
magazine cover which would stereotypically
make the character come across as fearless and
bold; however in our case the protagonist
suggests vulnerability and weakness. Adding
additional pugs and features of other films and
content in varied fonts would help us achieve
more codes and conventions making our piece
of a higher standard. We ensure that the price,
date and barcode were included as it also
follows the basic conventions that helps
established the form of advertisement.
Choosing to name our publication “The Reel”
was an appropriate choice as the reel object is
used to run the film before developing the
footage.
For the poster we believed it would be a wise
choice to include both the protagonist as the
poster would be more likely to be seen by
our audience, therefore it is important to
know who holds most of time in the trailer
but also know the names of the actors if the
audience are interested in researching
background information before seeing the
movie. Most posters which I have analysed
were very minimal as producers would want
the image to be the main at focus having
just; the title, actor’s names and film credits
with possible reviews and star ratings. The
background we choose to use for the poster
(brick wall) is closely related to the whole
trailer as it was mostly filmed outside.
When it came to choosing a font for the film
title and other written elements, we believed
the available choices on Final Cut were not
suitable for our genre therefore, we have
found a website which catered for our needs,
Dafont.com
The main task acted as a heavy influence for the ancillary pieces as the
trailer has been already created, therefore we were aware of the
character’s personas which made it easier to portray them in
photographs but also the theme of the movie was established; this
simplified the progress of choosing colour schemes and poses for the
actors. Within the research section I had analysed genre appropriate
trailers and matching the posters that goes with the corresponding
production. With this exercise it enabled me to see the different colour
schemes and arrangements that will go with a particular film.
