The nine shots that make up the opening sequence of "The Incredibles" introduce several characters that appear to have superpowers. Each shot is accompanied by dramatic and fast-paced music to create tension and excitement. The shots show characters in costumes that suggest they can fight evil forces. They feature people of both genders, of varying colors, and with different powers like super strength, the ability to light oneself on fire, and possibly magic. Taken together, the shots seem to set up a story where a group of superheroes with unique abilities will work together to battle an ominous threat.

- 2. The first shot in ‘The Incredibles’ is a shot of a character opening up their shirt and then revealing a super hero costume underneath, this could connote that the movie is going to be about someone who is ordinary on the outside and tries to fit in with other people, as they are hiding their superhero costume underneath ordinary clothes, however underneath the ordinary clothes we find that they are hiding something supernatural about them. The camera then zooms into the ‘I’ and then it feels as if the camera goes right into the person’s body which could connote that their superpower is something that is hiding inside of them. Also, the costume itself is red which could suggest that the characters are going to be in danger or cause danger and harm. The shot shows us that one of the main characters is a male as the hands are very masculine. Dramatic, upbeat music starts playing instantly, this attracts the audience as they know something is going to happen.
- 3. In the second shot of ‘The Incredibles’ we see the movie title in a very masculine, bold font. This connotes that the target audience of this movie is male as the font would attract the male audience by its masculinity. The text is surrounded by darkness and during the shot, a yellow light appears behind the title and surrounds the text. This could connotes that perhaps the story line of ‘The Incredibles’ will be about the main characters fighting darkness and bringing light to the world as when the title disappears the characters appear from the light. The dramatic music continues but then stops halfway through the shot and we hear footsteps of the characters as they appear from the light. When the characters disappear, drums start playing. The music tells the audience how to feel during this title sequence. Drums could create the feeling of anticipation.
- 4. The third shot is a shot of a character who looks very masculine. This suggests that one of the main characters is a male. It looks as if the character is punching the red colour surrounding it, this could suggest that a male character is going to defeat an evil force and/or that they will be in danger because the colour red connotes evil, harm, blood and danger. The music tempo speeds up even more creating more tension and excitement. It creates enigma as the audience are going to ask themselves questions like who is this masculine character and what will he do in the film. The music sounds quite dramatic at this point. It gets the audiences’ attention because the shots change very quickly and the music is loud and fast.
- 5. In this shot we see a woman’s leg dressed in skin tight trousers which could be a superhero costume. This shot could suggest that one of the main characters is going to be a woman. The background is blue which catches the audience’s attention and it’s classed as a ‘loud’ colour. When the character kicks the air, a white star appears on the screen. The colour white suggest innocence and good. This could connote that the character is not an evil one and that she will be fighting for the good side. The music continues to be fast paced and loud which leads to more tension and excitement of the people watching.
- 6. In the next shot we see a different character. The character is wearing a mask which suggest he is a superhero. The character is yellow and the colour yellows signifies energy, this could suggest that the character has a lot of energy within themselves. When the character appears and sticks their arm up, a white spark appears. The background is red again which grabs the audience’s attention and also suggest that this character, too, will be fighting an evil force. In the past 5 shots we have seen 3 different characters and as the shots suggest that they will be fighting against evil, it might be that they will all be fighting together. The music continues to be loud and faced paced with loud drums.
- 7. In this shot we see a woman which is half blue, white and red. There is also black behind her which could connote that she has something dark within her. The black is behind her which could mean that she does not know she has that darkness or it could also connote that darkness tries to defeat her and she does not know about it. There is an angry expression on her face which could suggest that in the movie there will something that will cause this character to feel a lot of anger. The music picks up pace and the pitch is higher, creating more tension.
- 8. The seventh shot shows a baby which lights on fire. As we know that the characters in the other shots are superheroes, it could suggest that this character is too and that their special power is to be able to light themselves on fire. The colour red and black is in the background again suggesting that this character could be in danger at some point in the movie. As the shot goes on, the baby comes closer to the screen and all we see is a black background and its eyes. The music becomes louder and faster paced.
- 9. The eight shot is a quick cut to a mid shot of a man. The music creates more tension as the volume of the drums increase. This shot is very similar to the fourth shot however, here we have a male character rather than a female.
- 10. In this shot we see a female dressed in a superhero mask. The colour purple suggest magic and mystery. The music gets even louder and the tempo increases.
