QUESTION 1
FILM OPENINGS START WITH CERTAIN CONVENTIONS
REGARDLESS OF THEIR GENRE.
• At the beginning of every film there is a logo of the
production/distribution company because the movie itself
advertises the company which has helped with the
funding and media distribution. Examples of these are
DreamWorks, Universal and many more.
DISTRIBUTION COMPANY
Summit entertainment’s design is very similar to our distribution company. The
background has an ombre style colour and in the logo is placed in the middle. The
company also distributes many films, the same genre as our, such as Mr. and Mrs.
Smith, Divergent and others – (action, thriller, mystery).
FILM TITLE
• The title of the film also appears at the very
beginning and it always has a purpose. Most of the
times, titles reveal a bit of information about the
movie itself, for example the title “The Hunger
games” says exactly what the movie is about –
games of hunger. However, the title “Red 2” has
more hidden and secret meaning, as it only says a
colour but no one from the audience knows what
the movie is going to be about just by reading the
title. Of course, the colour red conveys ideas such
as blood and crime, which actually reveals the
genre of the film – action, thriller, crime.
Our film title comes right after our establishing
shots, and it’s placed on the whole screen over
the image of a character. The title is the main
aspect and it’s shown over the image of an
important character, to present her as a part of
the “Project Scorpio”. Without the title, the
image only shows a woman, who is possibly
waiting for the train.
THE ORDER OF TITLES
The purpose of our title sequences is to inform the audience with the most
important members of the production. It also has an advertising purpose,
because when an audience sees a famous name, they will definitely watch
that film. The order for our title credits is like:
title - actors – casting – costume – music – editor – production designer – photography – writer – director
We used this order of titles because this is the legal way of titles for films and
also because the audience can focus on the actions more than on the titles.
COMPARISON
• The titles for “Forest Gump” • The titles for “Skyfall”
Our title credits are similar to the ones for Forest Gump,
as our order is similar and we have also used the most
important titles because we want to highlight what was
happening in the background of these titles.
MISE EN SCENE
• The collage bellow represents our use of mise an scene, and how that is
similar to the mise en scene of Mr. and Mrs. Smith, which is also a film
about two spies. The use of red lipstick, black outfits, gloves and mobile
phone is conventional as spies in other films are using the same props,
costume and make up, conveying the mystery, classy/bossy characters
and their unknown identity.
