Evaluation Task 3
Introduction
■ In recruiting an audience, filmmakers and marketing executives do their best to target those who have
an interest in that particular type of film.
■ As production continues, audiences are tested for their responses to marketing material such as
trailers and commercials, with test screenings usually beginning as soon aa a rough cut of a film is in
place, often with a temporary score and no credit sequences. At a cost of $10,000-$20,000 for each
screening.
■ After the initial screening, the audience, usually 300-500 people fill out forms that contain questions,
some open-ended such as whether they like a performance or the ending or what they think should
change and others more categorical.
■ Test screenings are important to filmmakers as it determines whether an audience will enjoy their film
or not. This meaning that they will gain an insight on what to change and what to keep the same to
gain an audience.
■ Business market research is the process of collecting data to determine whether a particular
product/service will satisfy the needs of your customers.
■ Understanding market research and using it to your advantage is vital in reaching out to a target
audience and increasing sales. Understanding the needs of existing customers and why they chose
your service over competitors. Identify new business opportunities and changing market trends.
Target audience
■ Certain films have certain target audiences which the film is either aimed at or is loved by that
specific audience.
■ There is a big age range of people, both genders that like Crime films. Crime thrillers are
usually targeted to a mature audience due to the strong language and scenarios, for example,
murders.
■ Crime Drama Target Audience- Crime drama target audience are usually aimed at both females
and males. The males interest the females as males stereotypically are involved in the crime
and the female actresses attract the males as they find the females attractive therefore
stereotypically they would watch the film. The age is usually 15, therefore that is where the
target audience age range will start. Both females and males find crime drama’s interesting
and are aged around the age of 40 so Crime Drama target audiences are females and males
aged 15-40 years old.
■ Age Range- We decide to have 15 – 30 year olds as the target audience as this age range is
quite wide. This is because the audience will need to be interested in both Crime and Thriller
films to enjoy the trailer. Stereotypically people who like crime films, also like thrillers.
■ Gender- We decided that the audience would be both female and male. The females would be
attracted to the male characters and the males would be attracted by the content, for example
the action or crime.
Pitch presentation
■ How did you get this feedback?
For our pitch presentation, we got some verbal feedback from the class. We presented our pitch and then
the class asked any questions they had as well as gave us their opinion on how they thought we could
improve. From asking questions, we understood what the audience didn't understand and so we also used
this as improvements.
■ How did you use this feedback?
We answered any question the class had and gave them more of an idea of what the trailer will be about.
We then used this feedback to change a few things on our trailer in order for the audience to understand
what we are trying to do and what to expect. This will helped in the future as the audience knew what the
trailer was about in the end.
■ Was it useful? What insight did it give you?
Yes, this feedback was useful as it allowed us to gain some knowledge on what an audience thinks of our
ideas. As it was our brief idea of what we wanted to create, hearing what the class had to say helped as it
gave us some more understanding of what they would enjoy as well as what we could do to ensure they
understand the plot of the film.
■ Did you make any changes to your work because of it?
Yes we did make some changes to our trailer such as the name of the film. It was said that “Split” is an
already existing film that is very popular and so we decided to change the name of the film to “Divide”
instead. However we kept the plot of the trailer the same as we had a good understanding of what we
wanted to do as well as how we wanted to do it. We did take the feedback into consideration and made
sure that the audience will understand the plot of the trailer and what it is about.
Pitch presentation feedback
■ This is the verbal feedback we received from the class. This is what
the class had to say about our teaser trailer idea. We took these
different factors into consideration when planning out teaser trailer.
We used this feedback in order to improve out trailer to the best of
our ability and to ensure the audience will enjoy our trailer as well as
have some sort of understanding of what they are watching.
Rough cut
■ How did you get this feedback?
For the rough cut, we allowed the class to watch out teaser trailer. They then made some notes on what
they enjoyed about our trailer and what they thought we could improve. This was a written form of
feedback.
■ How did you use this feedback?
We read what everyone had to say about our teaser trailer and saw what most people had in common.
This meaning that they all pointed out something similar that they thought we could improve on. We then
went through all of the feedback given and watched back on our trailer and saw what they were talking
about and started to get an idea of how we could improve.
■ Was it useful? What insight did it give you?
Yes, this feedback was very useful as it allowed us to make our teaser trailer better and it also gave us an
insight of what an audience thinks of it and what they understand from the trailer. This allowed us to
improvde our trailer and ensure that the audience will enjoy it and get the story we are trying to portray.
■ Did you make any changes to your work because of it?
Yes we did. We changed a few things after receiving this feedback. This includes the soundtrack as well as
taking out some of the unnecessary clips. We changes the music in the beginning of the trailer as the
previous soundtrack didn't really match up too well and didn't’go with the genre as well as we thought it
Rough cut written feedback
■ This is the written feedback we received from the class after they
watched our rough cut teaser trailer. This is the feedback we used in
order to make changes and improve our final draft. This feedback
was very useful to us as it allowed us to finish out teaser trailer to the
best of our ability as well as ensured that the audience will enjoy
what they are watching and know what the trailer is about.

The magazine cover didn’t have many
changes made. We had to add the little block
in the top right corner as we realised we
forgot to include it as well as the name we
used at the bottom as it was an already
existing person and we thought it would be
better to make one up.
The poster cover had a few changes made to it. This
included the colour of the writing, the font of the
writing, the information on the billing block and the
background of the poste. We needed to change some
of the names used in the billing block to make it
more realistic. The background image just made the
poster look better overall and the use of different
fonts stood out more.
Final screening
■ How did you get this feedback?
This feedback was given through comments on YouTube. The class watched the final version of our
teaser trailer that we created using the feedback we received from the class in the passed. They
then each left a positive comment on what they liked and thought was good about the trailer as well
as what they thought we did well.
■ How did you use this feedback?
We used this feedback in order to gain some knowledge on what we do well when filming and
editing. We also realised what different techniques we used throughout the making of this trailer
which could possibly help us in the future.
■ What insight did it give you?
From this feedback we realised what type of films and trailers our age group find most entertaining
and what grabs their attention.
■ What does the final audience feedback suggest about the success of your marketing campaign?
The final audience feedback suggests that we used a wide range of camera angles. We also used
music that suited the genre and scene to the trailer. The audience also stated that they liked how
we represented the character in the trailer. From this feedback we have come to the conclusion that
our marketing campaign was a success.
