Analysis on an audience member.
I had asked a friend to participate in an activity that would help expand my understandings of
how an audience member would react to a thriller, the two thrillers I had asked to watch have
some similarities in what I wish my thriller to be about.
1. Thriller opening sequence AS media,
Immersed:
She had found the parts underwater effective as you could hear her heartbeat, this was
because she had felt it had created anticipation within the opening sequence. She also
enjoyed the part when slow motion was used as it had created as sense of timing, she as an
audience member had felt the girl was running out of time this led to the audience member
feeling apprehensive.
However, she didn’t like how long the opening sequence went on for, she had felt that the
swimming had become repetitive and had started to feel disconnected from it as she was
becoming bored.
She believed that we should include suspense, however we shouldn’t hold it out for too long
as it becomes boring.
2. Thriller opening sequence AS media,
Presence:
As an audience member she had found effective how the house and surroundings was
shot, so for example the house being empty had created a sense that no one had lived
there for years and that it was deserted. The shot she had liked in particular was the
window shot, this had given her a wider view on the area the girl was in, and she also
said it enabled her to have a wider imagination for the opening sequence. She had liked
the shot of the man was in the mirror as well as the blood in the sink as it foreshadowed
for her as an audience member that she was and could be in danger. The shot when the
pipes started shaking when she turned on the taps had
caught her attention because it had created suspense, she
the thought that this thriller might be psychological as she
believes that there could be a twist within the actual movie.
However she felt like the opening sequence of presence
was too predictable, as when the girl had shouting out
“hello” and the doors closing made the whole thing turn tacky and cliché
She said that in my thriller should use foreshadowing as this could get the audience
members minds thinking, so for example we could incorporate a scene where the couple
are watching a kidnapping movie.
