This document summarizes a research paper that proposes a new probabilistic approach called probabilistic-based optimal node localization (PONL) to localize sensor nodes in wireless sensor networks. PONL models noise using a probabilistic model rather than assuming Gaussian distribution. It formulates node localization as an optimization problem to find a maximum likelihood estimate. The non-convex optimization problem is solved using relaxation techniques to obtain a sub-optimal solution. Simulation results show PONL has better performance than existing node localization algorithms.
