Problem solving reading and writing classes
What is Reading?
Reading is the process of extracting meaning from a written or printed
text.
• A. Level: ESL high-intermediate level.
• B. Aim: To help students understand the content and
identify the main idea.
Briefly Description
Materials
•1. Academic article: Ice Cream.
•2. Pencils or highlighters.
•3. Chalk and blackboard.
Before started
• 1. What is Ice cream made of?
• 2. Where does ice cream come from?
• 3. What is your favorite flavor?
Procedure
1. Pre-read the article Ice Cream.
2. Seven students will read each paragraph of the article out
loud.
3. Students will read the article by using skimming and
scanning to find the main idea.
4. Give students chance to ask about hard new vocabularies and teacher
will give the students the meaning of the words. Also, give chance to
other students to guess the meaning of bold terms in the passage.
5. divided the students into 4-5 groups, and each groups consist of 3-4
students.
6. Each group will answer the article questions and type the answers in
the blackboard.
Procedure
Start reading and keep in your mind
1. Read the article Ice Cream and ask your teacher for the hard new
words.
2. Think about the different types of information you could find on
the passage. Then, read to see if you were right.
Post-Reading Activities
There are four kinds of Article Questions
A.Five General Questions (article topic/ main idea)
B. Four questions True/False
c. Three questions Identify Words refer
D. Three questions words meaning

What is a writing?
Writing is: "Writing" is the process of using symbols
(letters of the alphabet, punctuation and spaces) to
communicate thoughts and ideas in a readable form.
Briefly Description
•A. Level: ESL advance level.
•B. Aim:
- Help students increase their writing skills.
- Help students with sentence combination
Materials
1. Print copies of the original academic article: Martin Luther King.
2. Print copies of the text modified of the academic article: Martin Luther
King.
2. Pencils.
3. Chalk and blackboard.
Procedure
- Before class, make two copies of the worksheet for each student.
- Hand out a copy of the text modified academic article for each student.
- Ask the students to write their names at the top.
- Teach students the two type of sentence:
1. Sentences combination by using these examples:
 She was our Latin teacher.
 We were in high school.
 She was tiny.
 She was a birdlike woman.
 She was swarthy.
 She had dark eyes.
 Her eyes were sparkling.
 Her hair was graying.
After combining
 Our Latin teacher in high school was a tiny woman. She was swarthy and birdlike.
She had dark, sparkling eyes and graying hair.
 When we were in high school, our Latin teacher was a tiny woman. She was
swarthy and birdlike, with dark, sparkling eyes and graying hair.
2. How to make your sentence make sense.
- Then, tell the students to read the article.
- After that, divided the students into 4-5 groups, and each groups consist
of 3-4 students.
- Each group will answer the article questions and type the answers in the
blackboard.
- Lastly, hand out a copy of the original academic article for each student.

For examples,
• Exercise two: make the sentence make sense
• 1. Martin Luther King
• 2. Born on January 15 1929
• Answer: Martin Luther King was born in January
