PROCEDURES AND
OBSERVATIONS
The experiments
involve four
tests.
1. Set up all the apparatus
or equipments as shown.
2. Pivot bar should be in
balance and pulleys must
be attached using bolt
and nut.
3. Then, we hang the weight
hook according to the
data given on the lab
sheet.
TEST 1
 Hang weight hooks
 Since the weight of
hooks each weight
0.1N, we should add
1.9N hooks in order
to make it total
weight 2N.
 Value F1 and F2 are
recorded
 Distance d1 and d2
are measured and
recorded
TEST 2
 The right hand

weight hook is
adjusted to a hole
nearer the pivot bar
 The bar are
balanced in the level
position with
sufficient load
 The weight value F2
and distance d2 are
recorded.
TEST 3
 The right hand hook
which is without
weight are hang
through the pulley
 The weight hook is
loaded to balance the
bar
 The weight value F2
and the perpendicular
distance d2 are
recorded.
TEST 4
 Panel is set up as
shown in figure
 The procedure in
Test 3 are repeated
in Test 4 ,with cord
passing over the left
hand pulley and
attach to the lowest
hole of the centre of
the bar.
 Weight value F2 and
distance are recorded
OBSERVATIONS
What we observed during this experiment?
 The sum of the forces in one direction is equal to the sum
of the forces in the opposite direction;
 The sum of the anticlockwise moments about any point is
equal to the sum of the clockwise moments about the
point.
 Turning moment was measured by multiply force acting
on a body and perpendicular distance between force and
pivot, where
M
M
F
r

= F X r
= Turning moment
= Force acting on a body
= Distance from pivot


When performing this experiment, we should
use different weights and distances . The
results should be entered in a table and a
different point chosen about which moments are
taken.

 Two factors involved in this experiment:
i.
The magnitude of of the force applied
ii.
The distance of its line of action from the
axis about which turning takes place.
