Being Professional
vs
Being Unprofessional
Mr. Saim, a sales executive in an FMCG company, works in a town called Chandela.
He send present his report to his manager Mr. Rao, after 10 days. Mr. Kaagh sits in
his regional office at Figskot. A day before the presentation, Mr. Saim fell ill and
stayed home. He didn’t go to the hospital to check on the doctor. The morning of
the presentation, he informed his manager that he will not be able to present him.
Mr. Kaagh asked him to share the presentation so that he can go through it himself
and present the insights to his own manager. Whole day passed, but Mr. Saim didn’t
send the presentation. In the evening, Mr. Kaagh called Saim and asked him for the
presentation since he had to complete and present it the next day. Mr. Saim was in
a very bad shape and said that he is not in a position to send it. Mr. Kaagh got
angry and told him to do whatever he can to send because he needs to present the
numbers to the management.
-What and who went wrong?
-How can the situation be avoided?
-Suggest your findings and present the case.
Scenario 1
Mr. Noms, a very hardworking individual and a guru of his field. He is a
guru of his field, and no one can work better than him. Entire
department was dependent on him and had a solution to everything.
On other hand, Mr. Mose was an average employee. He also had a grip
on the field, but not as good as Mr. Noms. Both had similar experience,
similar degrees. After 5 years, it was the time to move up the ladder and
manage a team of 80 people. Everyone was sure that Mr. Noms is the
person to lead. But on the day, Mr. Mose was promoted as a team
leader, whereas a junior employee was promoted to work Mr. Noms.
-Why was Mr. Mose promoted and not Mr. Noms?
-How can the situation be avoided?
-Suggest your findings and present the case.
Scenario 2
Mr. Aims started a business with his friends. His friends told him that
they will not put him on the company documents because he is already
working for a big company, earns good salary and might face
compliance issues. Mr. Aims trusted because they have been very good
friends. The company was in profit in its very 1st
year. Profits was equally
split among the partners. But in 3rd
year, Mr. Aims was not given any
profits and was told that since he is not on the company board, he will
not get any profits. Mr. Aims was hapless since documentation wasn’t
there. So, Mr. Aims was kicked out as if he wasn’t there.
-How can the situation be avoided?
-Suggest your findings and present the case.
Scenario 3
After working for a good old year, I joined a competitor company
because of better salary, perks, benefits and other factors.
Now my new manager keep asking me confidential information that are
business secrets. He pushes me to call my ex-colleagues to get the
information about it and ask me to get their next move.
Personally, I feel that it is very unethical, but at the same time not doing
what my manager asks me to do might just land me in hot waters. I
want to make up things and tell them.
Scenario 4
-How can the situation be avoided?
- Am I doing the right thing to make up things?
-Suggest your findings and present the case.
What does Quran says on doing
Business
Surah Al-Baqarah Ayat 282
O you who have believed, when you contract a debt for a specified term, write it down. And
let a scribe write [it] between you in justice. Let no scribe refuse to write as Allah has taught
him. So let him write and let the one who has the obligation dictate. And let him fear Allah,
his Lord, and not leave anything out of it. But if the one who has the obligation is of limited
understanding or weak or unable to dictate himself, then let his guardian dictate in justice.
And bring to witness two witnesses from among your men. And if there are not two men
[available], then a man and two women from those whom you accept as witnesses – so that if
one of the women errs, then the other can remind her. And let not the witnesses refuse when
they are called upon. And do not be [too] weary to write it, whether it is small or large, for its
[specified] term. That is more just in the sight of Allah and stronger as evidence and more
likely to prevent doubt between you, except when it is an immediate transaction which you
conduct among yourselves. For [then] there is no blame upon you if you do not write it. And
take witnesses when you conclude a contract. Let no scribe be harmed or any witness. For if
you do so, indeed, it is [grave] disobedience in you. And fear Allah. And Allah teaches you.
And Allah is Knowing of all things.
Surah An-Nisa Ayat 29
O you who have believed, do not consume one another’s wealth unjustly but only
[in lawful] business by mutual consent. And do not kill yourselves [or one
another]. Indeed, Allah is to you ever Merciful.
Surah Hud Ayat 85
And O my people, give full measure and weight in justice and do not deprive the
people of their due and do not commit abuse on the earth, spreading corruption.
Surah Al-Isra Ayat 35
And give full measure when you measure, and weigh with an even balance. That
is the best [way] and best in result.
• Professionalism is a process, not something that can be
spoon fed.
