While these threats may be new, physicians’ response is guided and enlightened by a centuries-old ethic and tradition to care for the sick and the suffering even at some risk to the physician’s personal health. A recent example is the HIV epidemic from the 1980’s to early 1990’s. Previous to that, the medical profession have responded to help the nation during times of war and disaster. In light of these challenges, it is important and reassuring to the public to know that physicians remain committed to their professional obligations. As a display of this commitment, the AMA is leading an effort to have medical societies of the Federation support “A Declaration of Professional Responsibility” [Declaration is available at: www.ama-assn.org/ceja].
