Introduction of Company MINISTRY of DEFENCE Page 3 Since Malaysia achieved its independence on August 31, 1957, the Ministry of Defence has been officially operated in a building located in Brockman Road (currently known as Dato' Onn Street), Kuala Lumpur. The office of the first Defence Minister, the late Tun Abdul Razak, who had served from 31 August 1957 until September 22, 1970, was also located here. A few years later, the first Ministry of Defence building was built by the Federal Government at Jalan Padang Tembak, Kuala Lumpur to house the commander offices and Malaysian Armed Forces senior officers of all the three services. The building was constructed at a cost of RM 122,000.00 which was approved by then Defence Minister, Tun Abdul Razak on March 18, 1960. In order to accommodate the increasing needs with the expansion of the armed forces towards the control of national security responsibility, a complex which consist of six blocks building as high as four-storey each was built in front of the Personnel Services Division office. The RM2 Million complex was opened by the Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman on 6 April 1967. Following of the British Government decision to withdraw their armies from this region after 1970, Malaysian Government has taken several steps, Ministry of Defence was required to reorganize Malaysian Armed Forces’ need of its expansion purposes. Realizing this, the government has decided to build one new building for Ministry of Defence to accommodate all its agencies. Thus, on March 10, 1982, the foundations of the building had been launched by the Deputy Defence Minister, Dato' Abang Abu Bakar bin Datu Bandar Abang Haji Mustapha. The new building of Ministry of Defence which is located at Jalan Padang Tembak, Kuala Lumpur, was built with the price of RM 144 million. The construction started in early 1982 and completed in the middle year 1985. The building as high as 20 storeys which is known as 'Defence building' provide office compartments and meeting rooms. Its surroundings which is known as Defence Building Complex also provide some of the facilities such as the tiered parking, auditorium, Surau, parade square, guard station, tower, computer room, 'helipad', cafeteria and others. Ministry of Defence is led by Defence Minister and assisted by the Deputy Minister. Ministry of Defence organization contains two main services; civilian and Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF). The ministry is responsible towards the implementation of National Defence Policy and resources provided to the armed forces to defend the country.

It is an ideal place because the environment there is healthier compared to other military bases, which improves the health of the army who risk their lives to protect our country and to ensure the people’s safety.Not only that, Janda Baik is located in a hilly area, which means the whole forest and mountain can be used for 15 Conclusion

For example, the forest can be used to have a campfire or a survival test and the hilly areas can be used for training like a morning jog, which is harder compared to jogging on flat surfaces. Thus, themilitary base in Janda Baik is sure to produce good and quality training for the army.

My duties are to secure projects, recruit suitable project staffs like civil engineers, quantity surveyors and site supervisors. Not only that, to deal with the local authority for submission and getting approval for C.F application and of course, to make sure the project is delivered within time schedule and cost budget. 5) Do you enjoy your job? Why? I do, even though the job is struggling, if we work with interest we take it as a challenge. 6) List down some of the constructions you had been involved in the past. I have completed several infrastructure projects in Klang Valley especially housing projects. I have a few projects with Suncity for example, Sunway South Quay, Sunway damansara, Sunway SPK, Sunway Cheras and many more. Also, some project with SP Setia like Setia Alam and Setia Eco Park. 7) The latest project you are involved in? The current project I am working on are Setia Eco glade Cyberjaya and WCT land Parkland in Jalan Banting. 8) Any words of wisdom to the younger generation who wishes to be a contractor in the future? Work as a contractor is very tough and challenging. I believe that in order to be successful, one should not only have academic qualification, he must be able to foresee problems and solve the problem. Besides that, one must possess good human relationship skills and more importantly, a correct attitude towards the work. Once we had been appointed as the project architect by a developer, we will then appointing a Town Planning Architect for the relevant needful and prepare a conceptual plan according to the idea and budget of the developer. Upon the conceptual design is accepted by the developer, we will then prepare the development order, building plan and etc for the local authority approval prior the building construction is taken place. 18 1. Why you choose Architecture as your career? Did you enjoy it? To fulfill my ambitious since young. Definitely I enjoy my job.
- 19. 3. What are the things needed in order for a project to start? As mentioned in item No.2, a project team form up by the C&S Consulting Engineer, M&E Consulting Engineer, Landscaping Architect & Quantity Surveyor shall be form in order for a project to start. 4. What does your job does before, during and after a construction project? Upon appointed as the Architect for a project, we will follow up to recommending and appointing our project team consultants such as Town Planning Architect, Civil & Structure Engineer, M&E Engineer, Landscape Architect, Quantity Surveyor and other specialist to form a relevant project team. Upon the team been formed, we need to prepare and submit a developer order to the local authority for the relevant approval. Upon approved, we need to prepare the building layout plan for the stake holder acceptance and then forward to the other project team consultants for their respective detail design. Then we need to compile all the relevant design and obtain final acceptance by the stake holder prior to submit to the local authority for final approval. Upon the project been approved and executed, we need to implement the construction flow according to the set and time frame. Finally we need to ascertain the project quality is achieved and accepted and arrange for final inspection by the local authority for the certificate of fitness accordingly. 5. Is project brief a necessary in a project? Can you explain more about it. Yes. The project brief by the Architect is definitely important in order the project objective such as design theme, concept, quality control and etc is met. 6.What kind of struggles you had face during your job. Lack of free hand due to interruptions by the client. 7. What is your experience working with other Architects, Quantity Surveyors and Engineers? Good. Make sure you need a good rapport with other Architects, Quantity Surveyors and Engineer to achieve your project goal and objective. 8. Is it possible to build a building without having an Architect? If Yes, give an example. In general, it is discourage to build a building without an Architect. Certain small building such as small factory is build without an Architect in which the superintended officer’s roll and responsibility is taken over by the assigned C&S Engineer. Page 10. What is your opinion regarding Malaysia’s construction industry? Malaysia is rich in development land bank and the economy are fast growing especially in urban areas. The housing demand is getting increasing tremendously and as such, the construction industry especially residential project will be recorded with flying 19 9.
