Ernie, an 83-year-old veteran, tells stories of his experiences in World War 1 to a young boy and his family at a cafe in Belgium on Christmas Eve 1978. When an American couple, Patty and Frank, arrive looking to interview Ernie for a history project, he agrees to share his stories. Ernie begins recounting a tale of evacuating wounded soldiers by train just after Christmas in 1916, but cannot finish due to the traumatic memories. He then promises the boy a shorter story about how he almost died riding in a train under fire.
