PROJECTS IN CONTROLLED ENVIRONMENT – PRINCE2
THE IMPORTANCE OF PROJECTS
 To maintain current business operations – Profitability ,Service Quality , Customer
Relationships , Brand Loyalty , etc., famously known as “ BUSINESS AS USUAL”
 To transform business operations in order to survive and compete the future
 Important to have balance between business as usual and business change
 Projects are the means by which we introduce change
A PROJECT IS A TEMPORARY ORGANIZATION THAT IS
CREATED FOR THE PURPOSE OF DELIVERING ONE OR MORE
BUSINESS PRODUCTS ACCORDING TO AN AGREED
BUSINESS CASE
PRINCE2 -PROJECT DEFINITION
CHARACTERISTICS OF PROJECT
 CHANGE
Projects are the means by which we introduce change
 TEMPORARY
As definition states projects are temporary in nature. Once
the desired change is implemented, business as usual
resumes. Projects should have definite start and defined end
 CROSS-FUNCTIONAL
Projects involve a team of people with different skills working
together to contribute for success – external / internal
 UNIQUE
Every project is unique in someway – different team ,
customer, location etc.,
 UNCERTAINITY
Clearly , each project will introduce threats and opportunities
.Projects are more risky
PROJECT MANAGEMENT IS THE PLANNING ,
DELEGATING,MONITORING AND CONTROL OF ALL
ASPECTS OF THE PROJECT, AND THE MOTIVATION OF
THOSE INVOLVED, TO ACHIVE THE PROJECT OBJECTIVES
WITHIN THE EXPECTED PERFORMANCE TARGERS FOR
TIME, COST, QUALITY, SCOPE ,BENEFITS AND RISKS
PRINCE2 –PROJECT MANAGEMENT METHOD
A new house is completed by creating drawings,
foundations, floors, walls , windows a roof … None of
this is Project Management
So why do we need Project Management ?
The purpose of project management is to keep
control over specialist work to create the projects
products
Ensure that roofing contractor doesn’t arrive before
the walls are built so project manager has to plan
sequence of activities
What does a Project Manager do ?
 Project Manager Plans the sequence of activities
 Project Manager Delegates the work to team
 Project Manager ensures go according to plan
 Project Manager responsibility to Monitors the progress
 Project Manager exerts Control and spots any
opportunity to speed up the work.
 The Aim of PRINCE2 is to make the right information
available at right time for the right people to make the
right decision
PRINCE2 IS AN INTEGRATED FRAMEWORK OF PROCESSES
AND THEMES THAT ADDRESSES THE PLANNING
DELETATION,MONITORING AND CONTROL OF 6 ASPECTS
OF PROJECT PERFORMANCE
PRINCE2 –PROJECT MANAGEMENT METHOD
6 VARIABLE ASPECTS PROJECT PERFORMANCE
Costs : The project has to be affordable , there will be many
factors which may lead to overspending
Timescales : When will project finished – Defined start and
end date
Quality : Projects products must be fit for purpose finishing on
time within budget with out quality is not valid.
Scope: Exactly what will the project deliver ? Project
manager needs to have a detailed understanding of what is
what is not with in scope
Risk : All projects entail risks but how much risk are we
prepared to accept? Project manager need to insure and do
proper survey before taking risk
Benefits : Why are we doing this ? Often overlooked – Product
ready done within cost , on time , good quality , as scope but
not able to sell . Project Manager has to have clear
understanding.
