Methodologies that we will discuss:
1. Waterfall
2. Agile
3. Scrum

5. Lean
6. Kanban
7. CCPM
8. Spiral Model
9. Extreme Programming (XP)
10. Scrumban
WATERFALL
● Linear Sequential Life Cycle Model
● All the phases are completed in a single direction
● Requirements are very well documented, clear and fixed.
AGILE
● Offers High flexibility
● Phases divided into sprints
● Continuous customer feedback
● Incremental Improvement
WATERFALL
AGILE
Use Waterfall when:
❏ End of the goal is clearly
defined.
❏ Stakeholders know
exactly what they want.
❏ Project is consistent and
predictable.
❏ Working in a regulated
industry.
Use Agile when:
❏ The project is liable to change.
❏ Not sure at the outset what
the solution will look like
❏ Speedy progress is essential
for success of the project.
❏ Stakeholders need to be
involved at every stage.
Usage and Future of Waterfall and Agile
SCRUM
❏ An agile development methodology used in the
development of Software
❏ Adaptable, fast, flexible and effective agile
framework
❏ Collective responsibility and continuous
progress
❏ List of characteristics ordered by priority
HOW SCRUM PROJECT MANAGEMENT WORKS
I. Before Sprint: What to
work on for the period
II. During Sprint:
Distribution of work and
coordinate team,
Executing task.
III. After team: Reflection
phase. New sprint goals
are decided
FUTURE OF SCRUM
● In the project world, the Scrum Agile method is very much alive and sweeps all
before it.
● The top five sectors using Scrum Agile Technology are Financial Services,
Professional Services, Government and Insurance
● It is also no longer limited to software organizations
KANBAN METHODOLOGY
Kanban is a workflow management method for defining, managing and improving services that
deliver knowledge work. It aims to help you visualize your work, maximize efficiency, and
improve continuously
6 Core Practices of the Kanban Method:
● Visualize the flow of work
● Limit WIP (Work in Progress)
● Manage Flow
● Make Process Policies Explicit
● Implement Feedback Loops
● Improve Collaboratively, Evolve Experimentally
HOW DOES KANBAN WORK?
● “To Do”: This column lists the
tasks that are not yet started.
(aka “backlog”)
● “Doing”: Consists of the tasks
that are in progress.
● “Done”: Consists of the tasks
that are completed.
Try this project management methodology if:
• You’re looking for a visual representation of your project’s progress.
• You want at-a-glance status updates.
• You want to encourage using WIP limits so your team can stay focused.
• You prefer to work on a continuous “pull” basis.
This project management methodology might not be for you if:
• Your process is super complex or has tons of stages.
• You want a push system instead of a pull system.
SIX SIGMA
❏ Identifies the root cause of the
problem
❏ Improves quality by reducing
number of errors in the process
❏ Uses empirical and statistical
tools for obtaining the result
❏ Follows DMAIC methodology
ADVANTAGES
❏ Minimizes errors in the
process
❏ Decreases waste and
increases efficiency
❏ Helps in decreasing
illegal risk
DISADVANTAGES
❏ It is an expensive
process
❏ Provides a definite set
of guiding rules
Future of Six Sigma
❏ Primary focus should be on improving overall management rather
than pinpointing defects
❏ It would be integrated with other management practices in order
to make it attractive for larger pool of organizations
LEAN
❏ Lean methodology aims at
efficiency by following specific
principles
❏ It follows the 3M method
approach
❏ Precisely focuses on delivering
value
❏ Optimizes the flow of project
ADVANTAGES
❏ Minimizes waste
resulting in decreased
loss and increased profits
❏ Quality of products
increases
❏ Relationship with
customers becomes
better
DISADVANTAGES
❏ If a project is in
transition and not
end-to-end
❏ The project is
expected to
produce vague
results
Future of Lean
❏ Companies would continue to adopt it in
future
❏ It would be merged with other methods like
six sigma for better output
CCPM-Critical Chain Project Management
Developed by Eliyahu Goldratt, CCPM is based on the Theory of Constraints(Cause and Effect)
and is a different method as compared to the Critical Path Method, both of which seeks to
address the Limiting factor in a project . In a project plan, the critical chain is the sequence of
tasks that prevents a project from being completed in a shorter time, given finite resources.
Features of CCPM and Future
● The Steps involved.
● Brief Overview into Planning
Structure
Duration is assigned to each task.
CCPM uses "buffers" to monitor project
schedule and financial performance.
Quantification of duration using Monte Carlo
simulation
CCPM has been effectively used in the Aviation,
IT, Embedded systems and other high tech
industries where time and resources are very
important.
Spiral Model
● Risk-driven software development process
model
● Adopt elements of one or more process
models, such as incremental, waterfall, or
evolutionary prototyping
● Each phase beginning with a goal and
ending with the client review.
● Phases and Activities Done during the
Phase
Characteristics and Usage of Spiral Method
● The 6 characteristics of any
variant of the Spiral
Method
● Spiral Method is used in
cases of Large projects in
software development.
● And there are definite pro’s
and con’s of using this
methodology.
Extreme Programming (XP)
❏ The eXtreme Programming (XP)
methodology is another form of agile
project management that was designed for
software development.
❏ It emphasizes teamwork and collaboration
across managers, customers, and
developers, with teams self-organizing.
❏ Usability
❏ Future and chances of failure
SCRUMBAN
❏ Scrumban is essentially a combination
of Scrum and Kanban
❏ Scrumban borrows Scrum’s process of
quickly adapting to project changes
❏ It also adapts Kanban’s visual workflow
approach for process improvement
❏ Benefits of using Scrumban
❏ Future aspects
OTHER METHODOLOGIES
❏ NPD (New Product Development)
❏ CPM (Critical Path Method )
❏ Prince2
❏ PRISM(Project Integration Sustainable
Methods )
❏ PERT (Program Evaluation Review
Technique)
❏ RUP (Rational Unified Process)
Thank You
