Vladimir Propp and Tzvetan Todorov developed influential theories about narrative structure. Propp suggested that all stories follow 8 character archetypes and a specific sequence of events. Todorov proposed that narratives follow a 5-stage structure moving from equilibrium, to disruption, recognition, attempt to repair, and new equilibrium. Roland Barthes viewed texts as a non-linear "galaxy" of signifiers that can be interpreted through multiple codes and meanings rather than a single structured reading.
