PROTECTING
YOURSELF AND
OTHERS: NAVIGATING
OSHA'S HAZWOPER
TRAINING LEVELS
When handling hazardous materials, it's crucial to have the
knowledge, skills, and readiness to prevent harm to yourself, your
team, and the environment. OSHA's Hazardous Waste Operations
and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) standards outline vital
training levels for those involved in various hazardous waste tasks.
Understanding these levels is essential to ensure you're prepared for
your specific job role and tasks.
2
SITE CLEAN-UP OPERATIONS
40-HOUR HAZWOPER
TRAINING:
This training is designed for personnel who
anticipate direct and routine contact with
hazardous materials. It covers decontamination
procedures, hazard communication, and
advanced technical skills. It's suitable for those
working on tasks involving hazardous
materials.
3
SITE CLEAN-UP OPERATIONS
24-HOUR HAZWOPER
TRAINING:
Ideal for workers with limited exposure to
hazardous materials, this training covers basic
recognition, assessment, and control of
hazards, focusing on emergency response
procedures. It's designed for maintenance
workers or first responders at the initial scene.
4
SITE CLEAN-UP OPERATIONS
8-HOUR REFRESHER
TRAINING:
Mandatory annual training for those
already holding a 24-hour or 40-hour
HAZWOPER certification. Think of it as
keeping your safety knowledge sharp and
updated.
5
Initial 24-Hour Training
Lays the groundwork,
equipping workers with basic
hazard recognition,
assessment, and control
techniques. Essential for
safely navigating daily
operations in TSD facilities.
TREATMENT,
STORAGE,
AND
DISPOSAL
(TSD)
FACILITIES
8-Hour Refresher Training
Compulsory yearly training
required for individuals who
have already obtained a 24-
hour Treatment, Storage, and
Disposal (TSD)
HAZWOPER certification.
6
HAZWOPER
TRAINING FOR
EMERGENCY
RESPONDERS
First Responder

CLASSROOM
INSTRUCTION
AND
HANDS-ON
PRACTICAL
EXERCISES
Practical Exercises
Regular drills and exercises
help workers maintain their
skills and readiness to handle
hazardous materials incidents
safely and efficiently.
8
Classroom Instruction
Crucial for workers exposed
to hazardous waste and other
toxic materials to be familiar
with their roles and
understand the specific
hazards associated with
different types of hazardous
substances.
HAZWOPER
TRAINING FOR
WORKERS
Training Types
HAZWOPER training must
include both classroom
instruction and hands-on
practical exercises.
9
