In a democratic country like India, elected representatives like Members of Parliament (MPs) and Members of the Legislative
Assembly (MLAs) are very important in solving public issues and problems.
They act as communicators between the people and the government. Which makes sure that people’s voices are heard and
taken into account. Most of the time citizens do not know how they can approach their MPs and MLAs to discuss public
issues in a manner that leads to a timely and productive solution.
This post aims to present a useful guide on how to complain about an issue to your area MP or MLA in India so that your
concerns are noticed in a clear and influencing way.

To successfully talk to your MPs and MLAs, first, you have to recognize their positions and roles. The accepted roles of MPs
are their responsibilities to represent the government in their constituents through Parliament and/or the State Assembly.
MLAs act primarily at a state level in the Legislative Assembly.
Much of the public issues addressed by the MPs and MLAs encompass infrastructure issues, public health care, education,
law and order, and much more. You will be taking up your legitimate right as a citizen to see that your representative is doing
activities toward the betterment of your society by letting your concerns be heard by them.
Steps to Complain About Public Issues to Your
MP/MLA
Identify the Public Issues Clearly
The first and foremost thing to do is to identify and clearly state the issue you are the voice of. Make sure the issue is
concrete, important, and within the jurisdiction of your parliamentarian or parliamentarian. The most common public issues

are lack of good road conditions, inadequate public transportation, water supply problems, healthcare deficiencies, and
issues related to education and law enforcement.
Gather Supporting Evidence
Get the evidence you need to present for your complaint. This can include photographic shots, videos, documents, or other
material that demonstrate the seriousness of the problem. Solid evidence will support your stand and make your time the
context is giving the politician-in-charge a clear picture of the situation.
Draft a Formal Complaint Letter
The development of a well-structured, and organized complaint letter is the basic component. The format for the letter could
be this:
Date and Address: Begin the letter with the date followed by the MP’s/MLA’s address.
Subject Line: A brief and clear subject line summarizing the issue.
Salutation: Politely greet the MP/MLA.
Introduction: Introduce yourself and indicate your constituency.
Body: Specify the identified issue alongside its effects on society and the evidence you have addressed.
Conclusion: Demand particular actions or disposal and offer your help for further discussions.
Signature: Finish it with your name, contact information, and signature.
Use Multiple Communication Channels for Public Issues
Making use of alternative ways of making sure the complaint gets to the right people is better. Though, a formal letter is
still useful. These can be any of the following:
Get Support
Email: Direct your complaint email to your MP/MLA at the respective office of the MP’s/MLA’s official email address.
Social Media: Share on social networking platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram what you wish to say publicly and
tag and set up dialogues with your representative.
Portals: Online complaint systems of some state governments and political parties are the places where you can register your
complaint on the web. You may use one of the following methods.
Personal Visit: You can fix an appointment with the MP/MLA for a meeting at the office which can be a direct and personal
way of having your issue resolved.
Regularly follow up on your complaint
During the process of the complaint, you should be in regular contact with the officials. This is necessary to show them your
seriousness in penalty actions and to force them to act on it. Politely inquire about the status of your complaint and any
progress made.
Involvement with the Community
Mobilize community support for your cause. Collective action is the most powerful way to bring about change. You can form a
group of people and hold regular meetings to which you will prepare a petition to take to the local media to help get the
message out. The more complaints, the higher the chance it will resolve by the administration.
Be Unpredictable Yet Not Rude
Be persistent all through the complaint process. Nonetheless, continue to use a friendly approach when you send your emails.
It is very easy to ruin your efforts and exclude your representative by being too rude. So, be kind but firm.

democracy. Step by step you can obtain the required skill to express your concerns in such a way that it is easily understood
and addressed. And with this, the community as a whole will be able to benefit.
Do not forget, that they are there to perform their obligations to you, and your active participation is fundamental to holding
them responsible and ensuring good governance in the end. Act, persevere, and speak up on the issues that matter for the
good of all!
