Q132. Why are our Duaas (invocations) not
accepted. Why are the Duaas of many who
pray to other than Allah accepted?
Answer.
1. Allah listens to us
If we pray to Allah with all sincerity Allah surely listens to us as He
has promised in the Qur'an in Surah Al Mumin 40:60
"And your Lord says: "Call on Me; I will answer your (Prayer)"
Allah has said "Do Duaa to me – I will answer your Duaa"
He has also said in the Qur'an in Surah Baqara 2:186 "I listen to
the prayer (Duaa) of every suppliant when he calleth on Me"
2. Sometimes what we think to be good for us is actually bad
Sometimes the Duaas that we do assuming a thing to be good for
us but in reality the thing may be bad for us! As Allah has said in
the Qur'an in Surah Baqara 2:216
"Fighting is prescribed for you and ye dislike it. But it is possible
that ye dislike a thing which is good for you and that ye love a thing
which is bad for you. But Allah knoweth and ye know not."
Allah has said in the Qur'an in Surah al Isra 17:11
"The prayer that man should make for good he maketh for evil: for
man is given to hasty (deeds)."3. Example of the man who missed his flight
Let us take the example of a man who was on his way to catch a flight to go to clinch a
very important business deal which he expected would lead him to a huge profit. On the
way to the airport he got delayed due to a traffic jam and missed his flight. After missing
his flight he felt – "This is the WORST thing that happened to me in my life!!" On his
way back he switched on the radio in his car and heard a news flash that the plane which
he was rushing to catch crashed and all on board have been killed. He says after hearing
this - ""This is the BEST thing that happened to me in my life!!"
We see from this example many things which we consider to be good at a particular
point of time, we may consider them to be bad after knowing something more about it.
Human perception is very limited and not perfect.
For example somebody may be praying to Allah – "O Allah make me a millionaire!" But
Allah knows that if Allah were to accept his Duaa, he will turn away from the right path
of submission to Allah. Allah does say in the Qur'an in Surah As-Shura 42:27
"If Allah were to enlarge the provision for His Servants they would indeed transgress
beyond all bounds through the earth; but He sends (it) down in due measure as He
pleases: for He is with His Servants well-acquainted Watchful."
When we seek from Allah we should seek with conviction and fullest trust that Allah will
ordain for us what is BEST. We should not seek immediate results.
Some of our Duaas may be fulfilled completely. Some Duaas may be accepted later. For
some of our Duaas Allah may decree something better for us. For some other Duaas
Allah will give us the fullest fulfillment as a reward in the Akhirah. But for sure every
time a slave of Allah asks Allah he will be recompensed fully!
4. Duaa to other than Allah
A question often comes to the minds of people – how is it that many people even when
they do Duaa to other than Allah their Duaas are answered and they get what they
asked for?
a. Those who they call on other than Allah cannot do anything
Allah has said in the Qur'an about anyone other than Allah who is called in invocations
(Duaas) in many places:
Surah Al Hajj 22:73
"O men! Here is a parable set forth! Listen to it! Those on whom besides Allah ye call
cannot create (even) a fly if they all met together for the purpose! And if the fly should
snatch away anything from them they would have no power to release it from the
fly: feeble are those who petition and those whom they petition!"
Surah 13:14
"For Him (alone) is prayer in Truth: any others that they call upon besides Him hear
them no more than if they were to stretch forth their hands for water to reach their
mouth but it reaches them not: for the prayer of those without Faith is nothing but
(futile) wandering (in the mind).
Surah 6:71
"Say: "Shall we indeed call on others besides Allah things that can do us neither good
nor harm and turn on our heels after receiving guidance from Allah?"
Surah Yunus 10:18
"They serve besides Allah things that hurt them not nor profit them and they say:
"These are our intercessors with Allah."
Hence clearly ONLY Allah has the power to give anything. If their Duaa gets fulfilled it is
Allah who has fulfilled it. Those other than Allah whom they call cannot do anything –
they cannot cause harm nor cause any benefit.
b. This life is a test
Question that arises then is – "Why does Allah fulfill the Duaas of even those who pray
to other than Him? The answer of this is in the Qur'anic verses of Surah Mulk 67:2
"He Who created Death and Life that He may try which of you is best in deed"
This life is a test and Allah tests all people with good and bad. Allah gives them also from
his bounties as a test. Whether they follow the right path or follow the wrong path.
c. Example of the thief and the hard working man
Let us take the example of a thief and a hard working man. One man works hard for an
entire month taking care of all Islamic guidelines regarding work and finally gets a salary
of Rs 3000/- (Rupees three thousand). Who gave him that Rizk (sustenance)?

Surely it is Allah! Another man simply robs that money and gets
three thousand rupees in 5 minutes. Who has given him that Rizk
(sustenance)? Surely again it is Allah.
It is Allah alone who provided. But one received Halaal and another
got Haraam.
Similarly it is Allah alone who provides but one earns the pleasure of
Allah by doing Duaa to Him and another earned the wrath of Allah
by doing so! He may have got his wish in this world but in the
Akhirah he will be a big looser. This world is nothing but a deception
in front of the Akhirah. This act of seeking help from other than
Allah is "Shirk". Allah will never forgive Shirk as He has said in the
Qur'an in Surah An-Nisa 4:48
"Allah forgiveth not that partners should be set up with him; but He
forgiveth anything else to whom He pleaseth; to set up partners
with Allah is to devise a sin most heinous indeed."
Allah says in the Qur'an in Surah Jinn 72:18
"And the places of worship are for Allah (alone): so invoke not
anyone along with Allah"
Allah says in the Qur'an in Surah Fatir 35:13
" And those whom ye invoke besides Him have not the least power."
Allah says in the Qur'an in Surah al Hajj 22:62
"That is because Allah He is the Reality: and those besides Him whom they invoke they
are but vain Falsehood: verily Allah is He Most High Most Great. "
5. Some times Duaas are not accepted by Allah as a punishment of some bad
deeds
Some examples:
a. Showing impatience
Sahih Bukhari 8:352 "Allah's Apostle said, "The invocation of anyone of you is granted
(by Allah) if he does not show impatience (by saying, "I invoked Allah but my request
has not been granted.")
b. Unlawful Earnings
Sahih Muslim "Then [the Messenger] mentioned a man who had traveled for a long time.
Unkempt and covered in dust, he raised his hands to the heavens (and cried): 'O my
Lord! O my Lord!' His food was unlawful, his drink was unlawful, his clothing was
unlawful, and what he had provided to sustain himself with was also unlawful.
How could his invocation be accepted?" "
c. Not Enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong
“By Him in Who’s Hand is my soul, you will enjoin good and prohibit evil or (else), Allah
will soon send upon you a punishment from Him, then you will call Him and He will not
answer you.” [Ahmad Musnad, Saheeh At-Tirmidhee. No. 1712]
We should know that we don't have any help other than that from Allah if Allah is
unhappy with us and he does not Help there is NONE who can help us!
Allah says in the Qur'an in Surah Ale Imran 3:160
"If Allah helps you none can overcome you: if He forsakes you who is there after that
that can help you? In Allah then let believers put their trust."

Q101 dua not accept...

  • 1. Q132. Why are our Duaas (invocations) not accepted. Why are the Duaas of many who pray to other than Allah accepted? Answer. 1. Allah listens to us If we pray to Allah with all sincerity Allah surely listens to us as He has promised in the Qur'an in Surah Al Mumin 40:60 "And your Lord says: "Call on Me; I will answer your (Prayer)" Allah has said "Do Duaa to me – I will answer your Duaa" He has also said in the Qur'an in Surah Baqara 2:186 "I listen to the prayer (Duaa) of every suppliant when he calleth on Me" 2.
