Q6. What have you learned about
technologies from the process of
    constructing this product?
Hardware That I Used
● In my task to create a music magazine, I had to take images for the front
cover, contents page and double page spread. To obtain these images I
used a SLR camera, the camera allowed me to take very detailed and high
quality images. I then uploaded these images to a computer straight from the
camera for use with my magazine.
Software That I Used
● After I had taken the images, I needed to use Adobe Photoshhop to cut
around them and remove any unwanted background. I also used Photoshop
along with Quark to construct my front cover, contents page and double
    page spread.
Cutting Out Images
● I needed to cut images out for use on my front cover and double page
spread. In order to cut images out, I used the Bezier pen tool on Photoshop
and cut around the part of the image that I wanted to use. After I had gone
around the image with the “pen” tool, and inverted the selection and pressed
    delete to delete the background
Adding Effects in Photoshop
● I used a lot of text effects whilst creating my front cover such as outer glow.
In order to apply an effect to an object in Photoshop, you first need to find
which layer it is on and then double click on it (bottom right image). After yo
have double clicked o nthe layer, the menu in the left image will appear. I
selected outer glow by ticking the tick box, I then changed the settings on
the glow to make it more visible by moving the sliding bars. Other effects like
drop shadows can be added in the same way.
Adding Effects in Quark
● Whilst using Quark to create my contents page and double page spread I
used the drop shadow effect to add extra volume to my text. To add a drop
shadow to text in Quark, you select the element that you want to add the
effect to, which in this case the “Contents” text. I then right clicked on the
object and selected “modify” from the list. A menu then appeared which
allowed me to add and modify the drop shadow.
Drawing Shapes
● I used various shapes whilst creating my front cover, contents page and
double page spread. To draw a shape in Photoshop, you simply click on the
“rectangle” icon, you can choose what shape you want if you right click on
the icon. I used the rectangle tool to draw the “skyline” that is on the top of
    my front cover.
● To draw a shape on Quark, you select the “rectangle” tool and draw out
where you want the shape to go. I used the rectangle tool to draw the
background for my title on my double page spread.
Adding Text
● Adding text, is the same in both Photoshop and Quark, you simply click on
the text tool and draw a text box, you can then add text within these text
boxes. You can also change the text to your liking by changing the font and
font size as well as making the text bold, italic and underlined.
Adding Images In Quak
● I used images that I had taken in both Photoshop and Quark. To add images
into Quark you simply select the image icon and draw an image box. After
you have drawn the image box, you can right click on it and select “import”
from the list that appears. This will then allow you to select the image that
you want to use from your computer.
Adding Images to Photoshop
● To import images into Photoshop, you will need to clink on the file tab at the
to pof the page. I drop down menu will then appear, giving you the option to
place a picture or another file. After you click on this, your documents will
then appear and it will allow you to pick the file that you want to place into
Photoshop, I used this feature to import my Free CD cover onto my front
cover since I created it as a separate file.
Creating My Background
● Whilst using Photoshop, I used the gradient tool to create the background
that is on my front cover. To do this I selected the gradient tool by right
clicked on the paint bucket tool and selected gradient. After I had selected
the gradient tool, I clicked on the gradient bar at the top of the page (middle
Image). This then opened a menu that allowed me to change the colour and
amount of points that were going to be in my gradient. After I had selected
the points and colours for my gradient, I had to draw where I wanted the
gradient to go and in what direction.
Adding Frames in Quark
● Whilst working with Quark to create my contents page and double page
spread, I added frames to the images and text boxes that were on the page.
To do this, you need to select the text box or image that you want to put a
frame on and right click on it. A list will then appear with “modify” being one
of the options. After you click on modify, a box will appear, after you select
the “frame” tab, you can select a frame for your text box for image.
