Quaternary ammonium compounds (Quats) are positively charged organic compounds containing an ammonium ion. They are permanently charged and stable. Quats are effective surfactants and disinfectants due to their ability to form a monolayer on surfaces through attraction to negatively charged sites. To be antimicrobial, one of the organic groups linked to the ammonium ion must be a long alkyl chain between 8-18 carbons. Quats are commonly used for their stability, low toxicity, and ability to provide a residual disinfecting film on surfaces.
