My magazine is targeted at teens/people in their early 20’s, I chose this audience
as teens are more likely to buy music magazines as they’re students and will have
spare money for items like this, also they’re more likely to be in to the current
music therefore having a bigger target audience for my magazine and is likely to
appeal to other age groups but mainly teens, as I want to lean to a more
mainstream magazine because of the potential audience.
This has had influence in the name of my magazine which is, Rhythm, I have
chosen this name as it’s a word that you can associate with pop/RnB more
mainstream music and the word is a well-recognised word. Also some of the
connotations of Rhythm are red and up beat popular music, this is the reason I made
the masthead a bold, bright red, the red being bold and bright will also appeal to the
audience as it will standout to the audience and give the masthead dominant
contrast, the text was a solid font but not to be made to formal as it was slightly
styled. To make my masthead unique and more of a standout, I have added an image
of the lines of a heart beat machine in the background of the text, to help add a more
of a musical feel to the masthead and to overall hep make my magazine cover to stand
out from the competition so my target audience will be most appealed to my
magazine.
How did I go about making my masthead?
For my design layout I used the Guttenberg
principle, which is having use of the optical area. So
in my optical area I have included the masthead and
right next to it the main image of the artist, with the
main cover lines to the right of the artist as that is a
strong point for the audience to see them quickly. In
the dead space of the bottom right, I have include
the barcode and less important cover lines as it’s
not a need for the audience to see them that’s why I
put it in the dead space. For the photography of the
main image I used the rule of third to help me take
a good photo, so I had his face in the primary optical
area. I made the image to be a close up so its
appeals to the audience and the artist it’s easily
recognisable and so the audience could see the
guitar in the background, which is a convention of
popular music as a guitar is a popular instrument to
use.
Guttenberg principle and the rule of thirds
DEAD
CORNER
Comparing my front cover to real magazines such as Q, NME etc. Mine has some of
the same features such as the main image being the main thing on the front cover
with the masthead and the picture gives direct address like the real magazines. The
use of direct address is to help to appeal to the audience and to help make the image
a dominant contrast I have added an effect called brightness and contrast to help
make the image brighter and have better use of light to help the image stand out
over the cover lines.
Comparing
For the format of my article which was a interview I used three
columns to make it have a formal feel to it and so it’s easily readable
to all age groups. I have used pull quote to hopefully get the audience
to read it before anything else and if the audience wants to know
more they will read the interview so I have chosen a quote that will
get the audience’s attention.
