Question 1In what ways does your media product, use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
As country music people magazine is probably the most well known and most popular country music magazine I have decided to compare my media product with this magazine as it is the same genre, noting the similarities and differences and commenting on what ways my media product uses, develops and challenges forms and conventions. My media product in comparison with one of country music’s top magazines Country Music people…
The layoutSimilarities:Use of bold mastheadUse of date of issueUse of a puffMainsell aligned to the right, with the most popular and well known country instrument, the guitar and both set in a specific mise-en-sceneMajority of the text aligned to the opposing side of the mainsell, to the leftUse of barcode
The LayoutDifferencesUse of decorate font for my masthead, instead of sans serif fontMy front cover includes another imageMy coverlines include a variety of effects and layer styles, where as country music people on includes the effect shadow on their coverlinesMine has text on both sides, aligned to the left and rightThey both have barcodes, just positioned differently
Developing and challenging forms and conventionsAs you can see from the previous slide I have annotated the differences between my media product and a real media product of the same genre. An example of how I challenged forms and conventions of existing country music magazines it my masthead:For my magazine I had chosen to use a more decorative font, rather than a plain sans serif font. By doing this I think it has made my magazine front cover more interesting and by including the drop shadow behind my masthead I feel my masthead stands out just as much as country magazine people magazine does, but without the use of bold primary colours, instead more appealing and complimentary colours, black and purple. I was inspired to use a decorative font from looking at other genre music magazines, which have are extremely popular and well known, for example rolling stones, Kerrang and blender. By doing research and looking at different masthead I felt that decorative fonts made the masthead more unique and are the most effect font. Even though other country music magazines did not use a decorative font I felt that by doing this it would develop my product and make it more interesting than other country music magazines
Developing and challenging forms and conventionsAnother example of how I developed my magazine compared with other country magazines is the type of language used on my front cover. On my front cover the language used for the coverlines is more colloquial and helps to get the audience involved. I have also developed my magazine compared to other country music magazines as I have also included fashion and gossip as topics, which will be presented within my magazine. This is an attempt to attract my aimed audience of a younger generation and mainly females, as this is the two main other topics, which are associated and liked by this audience. I was inspired to do this by looking at how more successful magazines in other genres have included other topics such as sport news etc.
