Question 2 – How effective is
the combination of your main
  product and the ancillary
           texts?

What were you trying to achieve in
      your main production?
In our main production we aimed to achieve producing a
five minute film with the ‘romantic drama’ genre. Our film
fits in this genre as it follows the generic conventions of a
romantic drama, for example it has both a boy and a girl
character who fall in love but are faced with a problem
along the way. It also has a happy ending which is, again,
typical of a romantic drama. Finally the music we added to
our film also helped us to achieve this aim as the love
songs fitted in with our themes and storyline. We also
aimed to attract our target audience when making our main
production by ensuring they would be interested in what
was happening in our film, for example we used young
characters who they could relate to.
Was this also reflected in the two
       advertising products?
These aims were also reflected in the two advertising
products that we created alongside our five minute film, a
film poster and a radio trailer. Both fitted in with the themes
that appear in our film and linked to the content of our film.
For example, we ensured that they all fitted together by
using the same music on both our film and radio trailer and
using snapshots from our film as photos on our radio trailer.
We also cut a part of sound from our film and put it into our
radio trailer to give them a quick idea of what our film is
about.
How effective do you think the two ancillary
    texts are in selling your production?
Overall I think that the two ancillary texts are effective in
selling our production. Firstly they are two different types of
media meaning they may attract two different groups of our
target audience, for example those who listen to the radio and
those who visit the cinema and see our poster. This is
effective as it markets our film to a wider audience and will
hopefully attract more people. Also I think they are effective
selling tools as they give the audience an idea of what the film
is going to be like and if they are going to enjoy it, making
them want to go and see it. Finally, they give our film publicity
as if someone sees the poster or hears the radio trailer it is
likely to stick in their mind and give them a topic of
conversation when they talk to their friends and family.

Our final film poster was developed from both our own imagination
and knowledge along with ideas from real advertising products. We
used photos of the characters from our film to make it seem
realistic and to allow the audience to identify their relationship and
relate with the situation. We also added the tag line from our radio
trailer onto our poster to ensure that they both give the same
message to the audience.

In order to develop our film poster we took ideas and examples
from real advertising products like this poster. As the storyline
and genre of ‘The Perfect Man’ was similar to ours, we decided
to use ideas from this poster and used photos of our couple
together in order to introduce our characters and their
relationship. We also made sure that the title of our film stood
out so that the audience were immediately aware of what it
was.

Question 2 – how effective is the combination

  • 2. What were you trying to achieve in your main production? In our main production we aimed to achieve producing a five minute film with the ‘romantic drama’ genre.
