What have you learnt about technologies
from the process of constructing this product?
Hardware
 Computer hardware refers to the physical parts of a
computer and related devices. Internal hardware
devices include motherboards, hard drivers and RAM.
External hardware devices include monitors,
keyboards, mice, printers and scanners.

 The internal hardware parts of a computer are often
referred to as components, while external hardware
devices are usually called peripherals. Together, they
all fall under the category of computer hardware.

Apple iMac
Before creating my product I had never
used an iMac. To begin with, it was
difficult but became increasingly easier
after the first few uses. The computer is
very different to other computers I have
used, there are many features which set
it apart:



Processor: 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
(referring to speed)



Memory: 3GB 667 MHz DDR2
SSDRAM (referring to random
access memory)



The apple keyboard and mouse



User interface control



Apple Keyboard and Mouse
Before I could create anything I had to „learn‟ how
to use the apple keyboard and mouse. Many of
the functions of the keyboard and mouse are
different from those of an ordinary computer.
Some examples of this are:



No print screen button – to be able to print
screen you have to use command, shift and
4.



No right click - To bring up the menu which
you would usually do by right-clicking you
need to hold down the ctrl button.



Positioning of keys – The position of some
keys on the apple keyboard are different to
an ordinary keyboard. E.g. the positioning of
„@‟.



The apple key – the apple key can be used
when copying, pasting or selecting
information. Obviously, a windows keyboard
would have a windows button not an apple
button.
Studio Strobe lights
When taking the pictures for my
magazine cover and article I
recognized the importance for the
photograph to be well lit. To do
this, I used two sets of lighting:

1. Interfit ex150
2. Hemisphere 300 strobe lights
By placing the lights in certain
positions it meant that I could take
a well lit photograph with the
focus being on certain areas (I.e.
her face). Also, by slightly
changing the heights of the lights,
shadowing could be controlled.
USB Card Reader (SD)
 A card reader allows you to
import the pictures from an
SD card (taken by a camera
usually) onto a computer.

 In order for me to take the
picture on the camera, and
import them into the
computer to be used for my
magazine I had to use an SD
USB card reader.
Camera - DSLR Nikon D3100
When taking the pictures for the
cover page of my magazine I
used a DSLR Nikon D3100.
Doing this I had to learn all the
basics:

 Autofocus – lock

 Lighting
 Framing
 Pose/posture
Software
 Software means computer instructions or data. Anything that can
be stored electronically is software , in contrast to storage devices
and display devices which are called hardware. In terms of
hardware and software they are bot used as nouns and adjectives.
For example, you can say: “the problem lies in the software”
meaning that there is a problem with he program/data and not with
the computer itself. You could also say: “it‟s a software problem”.
The distinction between software and hardware is sometimes
confusing because they are so integrally linked. Clearly, when you
purchase a program, you are buying software. But to buy the
software, you need to buy the disk (hardware) on which the
software is recorded.

Adobe Photoshop CS5
(Creative Suite) V.12
In creating my front cover and my contents
page of my magazine I had to learn how to
use Photoshop, this included the following:



Layers



Tools



Filters



Brushes



Selection



Saving



Layer Styles



Import/export
Adobe Photoshop CS5
(Creative Suite) V.12 - Layers
I Had to learn how to use layers:

 Wrapping layers
 Clicking on a layer before
being able to change
anything

 Locking layers
 Hiding layers
Adobe Photoshop CS5
(Creative Suite) V.12 - Tools
I had to learn how to use all of the different
tools;



Marquee Tool



Lasso Tool



Quick select/magic wand



Crop



Eye drop/ruler/note/count



Red eye tool/Patch Tool



Brush tool/Pencil tool/mixer brush tool



Eraser tool



Blur/smudge/sharpen



Text



Shape tools
Adobe Photoshop CS5
(Creative Suite) V.12 - Select
 To select something in
Photoshop you do not select
the item directly but its
„name‟ in the layers section.
If you are dealing with text,
the layer is labeled directly
with the text. If you are
dealing with an image, then
the the layer is labeled
„image‟ followed by a
number.
Adobe Photoshop CS5 (Creative
Suite) V.12 – Import/export
 I learnt how to import/export
something on Photoshop.
This can be done by
accessing „File‟ and then
import/export.
Adobe In Design CS3 V.8
D.T.P
 Print Layout
 Frames
 Columns

 Exporting Images
 Placing
 Arranging objects

 Drop Cap
Adobe In Design CS3 V.8
D.T.P – Print Layout
 Making sure the size is
appropriate before the
possibility of printing it.
Adobe In Design CS3 V.8
D.T.P – Frames
 I had to learn how to work
with frames, I quickly
realized that you couldn‟t
work with images unless you
used the frame tool.
Adobe In Design CS3 V.8
D.T.P Columns
 Articles usually have a range
of uses of columns. When
writing my text I realized that
I would also need to use
these columns. To do this, I
had to learn how. (Layout,
Margins and Columns).
Adobe In Design CS3 V.8
D.T.P Exporting Images
 To be able to take the work
that I have done and to
upload It onto my blog I had
to learn how to import it into
a JPEG format.

 Here, I could then upload it.
This can be done by
selecting „file‟ – „Export‟.
Adobe In Design CS3 V.8
D.T.P Placing
 To be able to insert an image
into In Design you I had to
learn to constantly insert a
frame and then „place‟ the
image into the frame. This
was difficult to start with as it
was difficult to remember!
Adobe In Design CS3 V.8
D.T.P Drop Cap
 I Learnt that most magazine
articles begin the article with
a drop cap letter. This took
some working out, as it is not
where you‟d expect it to be!
Learning where to find Drop
cap, I made many mistakes!
But I eventually learnt that
drop cap could be found
under the character section
of the options bar.
Safari Browser
Homepage

Opening a new tab/window
Safari Browser
Revisiting from History

Bookmarks
Safari Browser
 Using safari as a browser
and working with Google as
a search engine. (This was
easier than learning to do
some other things because it
is similar to other search
engines which are more
familiar – i.e.
Chrome/internet explorer)
Prezi
 Prezi was probably the most
difficult to learn as I had the
shortest time period to learn
it. Prezi looks simple, but has
many more complex
features. The first thing that I
had to learn was actually
how to create A Prezi, as it is
nothing like any program I
have ever used.
Prezi – Share, Embed and
Download
Microsoft Word and Power
point
 Using a simple and familiar
program to take notes. There
was not much to learn, as
these were already very
familiar.
What technologies have I
learnt overall?
