Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product ?
Planning and Preparation I had to do lots of planning and preparation before I went out and took the pictures or started writing out the script for my project. I first had to do research on my chosen genre, which is grime. In doing this I made a mood board which I posted onto facebook to get constructive feedback. I had to make sure that I had a clear structure and layout for all parts of my magazine. I drafted out a basic layout for my projects front cover and double page spread. I then went out to take lots of pictures which would have been suitable for my magazine, most of which were not used.
Organisation Of Time For my product I made sure that i carried out research before anything. This took a few weeks because I also needed sufficient feedback, in order to be able to make suitable choices about my product. I then spent a weekend taking pictures that I would use for my product. Most of these were taken in places in Worcester that contained a lot of graffiti. The final product production process took about 2-3 weeks, not including planning time.
Photographic Skills A lot of my media product relies heavily on making sure that my pictures stand out and draw the reader in. To do this I decided that I would take my pictures in derelict and dirty locations, as well as a recoding studio, these all tie in well with my genre and my target audience. I took my pictures in the daylight because I thought that daylight makes pictures look better than artificial light. I made sure that my models were dressed in appropriate clothes to make sure that I stuck to the conventions of a normal grime magazine. I also used lots of props that were usually found on location to make the pictures stand out more.
Conventions of the magazine Front Cover – My front cover challenges normal conventions because I have used a white model, instead of a black male. Although this is not normal, the picture still works because of the language that I have used and the clothes that the model is wearing. Also the colours that I have used work well because I have used a dark background with bright writing so that it stands out. Contents Page – My contents page follows normal conventions because I have used a young black male, with his hood up, as lots of young males are perceived in the UK he looks like a “thug”. This works well because it follows with the dominant ideology surrounding grime music and the younger generation in the UK.
Post-production Skills In post-production we made a student magazine in order to get us used to using photo shop. This helped us develop our skills and made the task of designing our final magazine a lot easier. When using photo shop I used the same fonts and colours on the front cover to make sure that it didn’t look messy and stop the various objects on it look like they were “fighting for space”. I was also able to edit the pictures to make certain bits stand out, I think that because of the time I took to get used to photo shop it made me succeed in making a professional looking final piece. I also had to use Quark express which I used to make my contents page and double page spread. It was effective because it aloud me to give my product structure and made it a lot easier to place the different parts of the page where I wanted them.
What is the biggest thing that you have learnt from undertaking the project ? Whilst working on this project I have learnt and understood the amount of time and effort that goes into magazine production. From the planning stages right up to the final production. But personally I feel that the biggest thing I have learnt is using photo shop effectively to make a picture change and therefore stand out on a page. It takes a lot of practise but looks very professional when done properly.
