Evaluation question 2.
How effective is the main combination of your main
product and Ancillary texts?
What I had to do…
Brand identity.
Throughout my different mediums I strived to create a
strong link between them, whether it be through colour,
imagery or theme. Having a brand identity helps promote
the artist by giving the audience key features and
themes that can be easily remembered and recognised.
To do this I first had to research existing artists that have
done this within my genre.
The Prodigy.
•The text used on their album cover is unique, graffiti
like and looks eroded.
•Throughout the whole video the only colour that
comes through is the bright orange, just like the text on
the front of the album cover.
• The colour scheme consists of black white and
orange. This is the most obvious link between the
digipack of theirs and the video.
Examples of icons and colour scheme to
Create a brand identity.
•Throughout the digipack the colour scheme stays the
same too. While the album was new the website was also
themed like this, but with this being a while ago I’m not
able to find a screen shot of the website.
•The picture is plastered all over the video, its shoved in
your face all the way through, making sure it stays in the
mind. This ant became an icon of theirs and worked as a
marketing tool. Fans around the world made fan art and
tattoos involving the ant to show their support. This icon
was very successful.
•The band took on a new icon too, the ant
picture. The style is very unique, a scary
twisted image with paint drips.
Chase and Status.
• Chase and status did something very similar to prodigy, they chose
the clack and white colour scheme along with a yellow colour.
•Their icon is a bulldog, their album cover
is a close up of its face. On the website is
an icon of a bulldog.
Scooter.
•He made an icon of himself for how he
looks. His hair is white and there is a lot of
emphasis on his piercing blue eyes, along
with a sparkly stud.
•His clothing was also turned into an icon,
his big puffy, fluffy hooded coats. They
were present in both the website, posters,
Digipacks and videos. Creating his own
individual style made people remember
him.
Examples of the artists
Identity.
And so…
Using inspiration from my research I set out to
create some key features that
will be memorable about my artist. Then
integrating them into each of my texts.
The hyena.
One of the first key features came with the concept, having
the costume of a hyena on stand by I decided to use this
opportunity as it is.... unique in my genre and the music
industry doesn't seem to use these an awful lot.
Daft punk inspired me with his video of the
realistic dog mask, walking down the street
with a radio. It had an urban theme which I
wanted and was a really effective concept.
So now I had the hyena icon I could throw
it around my other two mediums. I was
able to use my artistic talents to my
advantage too, adding my own unique
style to the poster…
The digipack is a little more subtle in the canine
icons. There are reasons for this, why the
poster has a more clear representation than the
CD. The CD focuses more on the artist than the
main featured track, while setting the theme for
the main track with the canine imagery.
The poster advertises the 'becoming wild' tour
which is the main track. The poster is eye
catching, unique and fun just like the character.
Its purpose is to cause interest and catch the
eye for the tour, rather than express the artist.
Colour scheme.
• The colour scheme is also a huge part of the set. Red and blue are the
main colours, whereas the CD uses black white and blue. Again its to
create less focus on the main feature track and more on the artists
music as a whole.
• The black and white feel of the Digipack along with the urban bricks
create a more stereotypical theme for the music genre. The graffiti
referencing bricks and speakers do this. In the poster I focus on making
red and blue the only coloured tones in there, creating different sub
tones for the red as its a warm and welcoming colour, perfect
background tones for the poster. The blue tones really catch the eye,
vibrant, contrasting and vibrant against the red.
• In the video the colour scheme is rather obvious, in the performance section
that is. The room of which she performs is very blue, as is her scarf. The
concept part is warmer due to the setting being outside, the costume being
a warm colour and of course the scarf the suit wears. Creating with colour
link with the 3 mediums helps market the music and makes it more
memorable.
The scarf.
• The scarves were purposely put in the help the colour scheme and
her signature image. Luckily I have 2 vibrant desert scarves which fir
perfectly with the colour scheme. These desert scarves are worn
widely by people in the urban fashion scene. I decided they look
perfect and so included the scarves in every medium I did, creating
her own iconic piece of clothing.
Logo.
• Next comes the symbol of Cromanic, this
came around by chance as I was doodling.
The own tattoo style image has a simple yet
catchy look about it, so I used it as her icon.
The full image is used in the middle pages
of the digipack as a graffiti piece on the
brick wall. The icon comes into both the
Digipack on each page, and the poster,
rather subtle yet noticeable.
Type sets.
• Text in the mediums is bold and blocky. It looks modern and rather
technological which matches the genre of music. This reoccurs
throughout both the CD and poster, creating a strong connection in
the fonts I used makes the theme more recognisable. Also included
two type sets with paint drips too, both ‘becoming wild’ titles have
paint drips.
Reaching the audience.
• Speakers: Iconic and well
known symbol for all kinds
of music but especially for
electronic based music. The
bigger the better with
speakers so including big
speakers speaks volumes
about the music.... see what
I did there.
Canine.
• Canine: audience will make the
link with the reoccurring image
of the hyena and will
remember. For instance, if
someone was to see the video
and then come across the
poster they will make the link.
This way they remember the
artist and are most likely to
look her up.
‘In your face.’
• In your face imagery: There's
nothing soft about this medium
set. The camera angles show
close up shots, the editing cuts
fast and to the music and
movement is quick in the
concept section. The black and
white on the CD is of high
contrast, big bold blacks and
whites. The main image makes
eye contact with automatically
draws the eyes in. Perspective
distortion is used in the poster,
the hyena literally burst out of
the poster catching the eye
along with big bright colours.
Comparing.
The conventions I used to link my pieces
together do mimic the artists I researched.
• Clothing: Scooter has his signature fluffy hoody, I have the
scarves.
• Icon: chase and status have the dog, I have the owl, The
Prodigy have the ant. The hyena costume also acts as a
symbol for the artist, but more specifically for the main track
and the CD album. This is similar to what the prodigy set out
to do. The ant was a symbol used in the track only yet it went
on to become their mark. Yet the owl symbol is more for the
artist herself, more like chase and status.
• Colour scheme was used heavily in my pieces but unlike
many of the artists I researched I combined 2 different colours
and used them to illustrate the difference in the concept and
performance.
Conclusion.
Throughout this project I have taken extra
care to link together conventions and
ideas from a range of real media texts. In
depth research and creative thinking,
allowed me to create continuity across all
of my products by creating an identifiable
brand.
