Quotation Marks Review of Online Test
Basic Rules I:
• Use quotation marks to enclose words spoken or
written by others. Note: the examples below are taken
from newspaper/magazine sources. As such, there are no
in-text (AKA parenthetical) citations.
• “Nothing against Tom, but Johnny may be the bigger star
now,” says director John Waters.
• Newt Gringrich and Jesse Jackson have both pounded
nails and raised funds for Habitat for Humanity. This is
what Millard Fuller calls the “theology of the hammer.”
Basic Rules 2:
• When you introduce quoted words with he said, she
claimed or another signal phrase, put a comma after the
verb and capitalize the first word of the quote IF it is a
complete sentence. When you follow a quote with a
signal phrase, use a comma before the closing quotation
mark unless the quote is a question or an exclamation.
• “When my mother reported that Mr. Tomkey did not
believe in television, my father said, “Well, good for him. I
don’t know that I believe in it either.”
• “You children watch too much television,” my
grandmother scolded.
From the Online Test
“An old wife, an old dog, and ready money,” says Franklin, “are three faithful friends.”
“An old wife, an old dog, and ready money,” says Franklin, “are three faithful friends” (45).
The writer has paraphrased the passage and does not, in this case, need to place
quotation marks around common words.
“An old wife, an old dog, and ready money, says Franklin, are three
faithful friends.”
As Franklin puts it, your three best “friends” might be your elderly
“wife and dog” and having enough “money.”
"There are three faithful friends—an old wife, an old dog, and ready
money."
Note: Most of the time that you use quotes in essays, you will, in fact, include an in-text citation.
“When the well’s dry,” Ben Franklin says, “we appreciate the value of water.”
Ben Franklin said that we appreciate the important of water
when “the well’s dry.”
“When the well’s dry” Ben Franklin says, we appreciate the
value of water.
“When the well’s dry, we know the worth of water.”
The writer has done a sloppy job of quoting.
The counselor quoted Ben Franklin to the couple: Keep your
eyes “wide open” before marriage, but keep them “half
shut” after the ceremony.
Quoting Ben Franklin, the counselor advised the couple to
“keep your eyes open before marriage, half shut
afterwards.”
“Keep your eyes wide open before marriage, half shut afterwards.”
Do you agree with Franklin’s remark that, “one good husband is worth
two good wives”?
You do not need any punctuation between the word that and a
quotation—nor do you need to capitalize the first word of the
quote.
Ben Franklin claims, “the scarcer things are, the more they’re valued,”
which is why he holds that “one good husband is worth two good wives.”
“One good husband is worth two good wives; for the scarcer
things are, the more they’re valued.”
Why would Franklin say that it is “devilish” to persevere?
The phrase, “to persist devilish,” is Franklin’s addition to an earlier
statement by Alexander Pope.
So that the entire sentence makes sense, a writer would have to add a
word:
“The phrase, “to persist [is] devilish,” is Franklin’s addition to an earlier
statement by Alexander Pope.
“To err is human, to repent divine, to persist devilish.”
What does Franklin mean when he says that hunger is the “best” pickle?
Franklin says “hunger is the best pickle,” but does anyone understand what
he means?
The writer has done a sloppy job of quoting.
Franklin says, “Hunger is the best pickle,” but does anyone understand what he means?
“Hunger is the best pickle.”
“There never was a good war,” Franklin stated, “or a bad peace.”
Many pacifists would agree with Franklin that there never was a good
war “or a bad peace.”
The writer has done a sloppy job of quoting.
“There never was a good war or a bad peace.”
One of Franklin’s most quoted lines is, “fish and visitors stink after three
days.”
When relatives come to your house for a long vacation, you may agree
with Franklin that “fish and visitors stink after three days.”
One of Franklin’s most quoted lines is, “Fish and visitors stink after three days.”
“Fish and visitors stink after three days.”
Can you paraphrase the following, “What you seem to be, be really,” or
another quotation by Franklin?
When Franklin says to “really be” what you “seem to be,” he is telling us to
be genuine.
Can you paraphrase the following: “What you seem to be, be really” or another
quotation by Franklin?
When Franklin says to “be really” what you “seem to be,” he is telling us to be
genuine.
“What you seem to be, be really.”
