Rreala university for theworldGetting to know each otherStudents pair-off and have a chat amongst themselves. They should find out their name, where they are from, and what their hobbies are....To get discussion going, they could also find out things like:What three things their partner would love to have if they were stranded on a desert island
What movie their partner would star in if they were an actor, and what character they would play
What their partner would do with $10,000Each person then introduces their partner to the wider group, sharing the responses.CRICOS No. 00213J

For example, "I've never broken a bone. I have five sisters. I was born in Yugoslavia" The group tries to guess which statement is the lie. What’s DifferentBreak into groups or go around the room and have each person share something that makes them different from anyone in the group, like, "I've never left the state I was born in' or, "I am one of ten kids.“ Now find something that you all have in common.I’ve NeverFor this exercise, the entire group should form a circle with one person left standing in the middle. The person in the middle begins by saying "I've Never (insert words." Each person in the group who HAS done that activity should find a new place to stand. The person left standing in the middle begins the game once more. Editor's Notes

• #5: What’s for lunch? – $2 meals - nandos, German sausages, Hungarian langos, fried noodles & curries, plus Free fruit & drinks
• #10: Discuss transition issues- academic (learning styles); administrative (QUT admin); Lifestyle & personal (greater independence away from family, accommodation, new city, new friends) Acknowledge diversity of students at QUT (from high school leavers to working professional), part-timers, mature age, life experiences, cultural backgrounds. Remember some students have studied at university before.Regardless of differences students all share the same the experience of TRANSITION – major change. Why and what is different refer to orientation site – Changes you can expect http://www.orientation.qut.edu.au/transition/changes.jspIt can be overwhelming but give reassurance that its NORMAL and support is out there!!
• #11: Orientation is an important part of the transition process. Faculty orientation -learn about your course structure, faculty programs (PASS, PEER support), meet staff, more importantly meet students.Research shows - students who miss orientation experience greater difficulties adjusting to university. And that students tend to meet each other in the first 3 weeks of each semester. Why it is important? – related to your academic success, group work, support network, and of course lifelong success, e.g.. Google, Yahoo, Facebook started by uni friends.Give yourself a break! – give reassurance everyone feels the same way and support is out there!!
• #12: Show how you use the sites,QUT homepage – highlight quick links QUT Virtual – Personal calendar, add quick links, add newsIMPORTANCE of EMAIL as official means of communciationWhat is Blackboard? Why its important? What is Assignment Minder?
• #14: All questions should be answered during your Faculty orientation – Most faculty will have an enrolment session. Explain terminology – unit = subject; course= BS05; unit coordinator = lecturerAgain – there are no silly questions, chances are someone else is thinking it.
• #15: Staying on track, harder than you think becauseremind students of transitional issues, mentioned in the beginningcommon issue & questionsFew contact hours can be deceptiveGreater independence but more personal responsibility.Emails about support services where to get help
• #16: What to expect – go through how you experience the semester cycle, the busy periods, how all assessment are due on the same weekAcademic calendar, mid swotvac, exams – reminder to pick up a semester planner & weekly timetableImportant to know course structure, standard is 4 units/subjectsContact hours vs. actual study/research time, Group work, etc…Discuss likely study load, oral presentations, 2000 word assignments, on-going assessment – not common that we have 100% exam based assessment Tips what to do now – read unit lines,Remember not all students have studied in Australia before,
• #18: Don’t let small problems become big problems, deal with them early – Ask for helpAll administrative rules and procedures, are on this website.Cut off dates for changing units, fees, assessment, exams, etc... Remember correct enrolment is YOUR responsibility!
• #19: Staying on track is all about keeping a sense of balance in your life. Balancing the different aspects of being a student and juggling your different responsibilities & priorities does take some skill and planning. Of course it possible just have to be aware of it and stay on top of things.Take a holistic view - one affects the other; Study, work, family, partnersTime management – workshops in Kickstart website
• #20: Free counselling for students – not only personal counselling, welfare officers to help with Centrelink, financial helpMedical clinics on-campusCareers & employment – part-time jobs, workshops on course related jobs, e-portfolio in orientationISS – academic & personal counselling
