CINEMATOGRAPHY
• The camera movement here is the most significant. It follows him,
simulating his movements by keeping at a slow, steady speed
when he walks and then speeding up at the end when he moves
faster. This immerses the audience in the scene, as if they are
walking along with him.
• The unstable handheld camera reflects his confusion and unease
at being in prison.
• High angles are used to demonstrate his inferiority and
vulnerability.
• Close-ups help to make the emotion more intense and thus
heighten them, building suspense and creating an unsettled
atmosphere.
MISE-EN-SCENE
• The location is bleak and bare,
conventional of a prison in the use of
brick walls, lots of windows and
concreted open space.
• The lighting is dim, making all the
colours dark and washed out – even
the bright orange of his hoodie is
dulled.
• The costumes are conventional to the
point of cliché – using the
stereotypical hoodie and beanie to
identify him as a young criminal. Most
of the prisoners are dressed the
same, implying they are all in the
same position and also suggesting
that their individualism has been
removed.
EDITING
• Fairly long shot lengths, which are
conventionally used in this genre to build
suspense.
• Whilst continuity editing is present, this scene
also uses jump cuts. This further disorientates
the audience, forcing them to experience the
emotions of the protagonist.
• Appears as thought colours and lighting may
have been dimmed in post-production, although
this could have been done during production
too.
SOUND
• Symbolic use of silence to show his isolation and
build tension.
• The silence then emphasises the effect of the
sound when it does happen, making it seem
louder and more shocking.
• The noise of the wind remains a constant in the
background, perhaps reflecting the hopeless,
unchangeable nature of his situation.
• The soft way the lines are delivered contrast with
the violent words being said and the violent
actions happening, forcing contradictory ideas
together to highlight the differences and
therefore exaggerate each extreme.
