Key Indicators
Doubling the share of
renewable energy by 2030

www.irena.org/remap

Doubling the share of renewable energy implies a tripling of the
share of modern renewables.
Characterisation of the REmap Options

www.irena.org/remap
The 26 REmap countries

www.irena.org/remap

26 countries representing 75% of global energy demand by 2030
REmap Countries: Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Denmark, Ecuador, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico,
Morocco, Nigeria, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Tonga, Turkey, Ukraine, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom and
United States
The stepping stones towards a doubling
of renewable energy

www.irena.org/remap

The world can double its share of renewable energy in total final
energy consumption by 2030.
Breakdown of global renewable energy share
by sector and total

The greatest progress will be made in industry, buildings
and transport, not in the power sector.

www.irena.org/remap
Scenario projections for renewable energy share
in total final energy consumption, 2030

www.irena.org/remap

The less energy we consume, the greater the renewable energy share can be.
Breakdown of global renewable
energy use in 2010

www.irena.org/remap

Traditional biomass made up over 50% of the share of renewable
energy in total final energy consumption in 2010.
Breakdown of global renewable energy
use in REmap 2030

www.irena.org/remap

Global renewable energy use will grow by 110% in absolute terms. To double the share of
renewables, the world needs to focus largely on end-use sectors, not just electricity;
biomass will continue to be the largest source of renewable energy by 2030.
Technology cost curve for 26 REmap countries
based on the perspective of governments in 2030

www.irena.org/remap

The average cost of doubling the modern renewable energy share is negligible,
at USD 2.5 per GJ; doubling will require all options to be pursued.
Growth projections for specific renewable
electricity technologies

www.irena.org/remap

The potential of renewable power growth is significantly
underestimated in governmental projections.
Average weighted substitution cost
and benefits by sector

www.irena.org/remap

Transition has an average cost of USD 2.5 per GJ from the perspective of governments.
Consideration of benefits results in net savings of USD 2.3-13.8 per GJ, and benefits vary
widely by sector. Government and business cost perspectives are different.
Current and projected share of renewable energy in
total final energy consumption by country, 2010-2030

www.irena.org/remap

A doubling of the share of renewables worldwide does
not mean a doubling in every country.
Relation between country renewables
potentials and substitution costs

www.irena.org/remap

The cost of transition decreases per unit of energy as the target share of renewables
increases (the blue shaded area).
Countries: Australia (AU); Brazil (BR); Canada (CA); China (CN); Denmark (DK); Ecuador (EC); France (FR); Germany (DE); India (IN); Indonesia (ID); Italy (IT); Japan (JP); Malaysia (MY);
Mexico (MX); Morocco (MA); Nigeria (NG); Russia (RU); Saudi Arabia (SA); South Africa (ZA); South Korea (KR); Turkey (TR); United Arab Emirates (AE); United Kingdom (UK); United
States (US); Ukraine (UA)
Employment effects of REmap Options

Deployment of REmap Options will
result in an average net increase of
900 000 jobs and 16 million job-years.

www.irena.org/remap
How renewables offset fossil fuels

www.irena.org/remap

Renewables will mainly substitute coal by 2030 and become
the largest sources of primary energy.
Carbon dioxide emissions under REmap 2030

www.irena.org/remap

Renewable energy can provide half of the CO2 emission reductions
needed in 2030 from the energy sector.
Global biomass demand by sector in
REmap 2030 (in primary energy terms)

www.irena.org/remap

Biomass is versatile and can be used to provide power, transport and heat.
Global supply curve for primary biomass, 2030

www.irena.org/remap

The most affordable biomass comes from residue and waste,
which also makes up roughly half of the potential.
Guide for policies in technology life cycle
