This study compared the adoption of high-performance work practices (HPWPs) in small firms in Britain and France. A survey of 351 small firms found that British firms adopted a wider range but less integrated set of practices, while French firms focused more on quality-related practices. National differences in regulations and policies may influence the approach taken. The study did not find evidence of a comprehensive HPWS in small firms. More qualitative research is needed to better understand HRM in small firms and implications for theory and policy.
