CURRICULUM
GOALS
Goals for postgraduate training in conservative dentistry and Endodontics
would be to prepare a B.D.S graduate who will
 Practice Conservative / Restorative dentistry efficiently and effectively backed
by scientific knowledge and skill base. Essential knowledge of basic sciences
mandatory.
 Practice Endodontics in all its broader perspectives with basic knowledge of
oral anatomy, physiology and pathology and advanced knowledge of
periodontics, microbiology and immunology.
 Be kind and considerate and maintain high ethical standards.
 CONTINUE TO DEMONTSTRATE KEEN INTEREST IN CONTINUFNG
dental education in Conservative/ Restorative dentistry and Endodontics and
related dental specialties irrespective of whether he or she is in academics or
specialist practice.
 Be a committed teacher, defined as Restorative dentist keen to share his
knowledge and skills with colleagues, juniors or peers in the specialist area of
the field.
OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE
The following objectives are laid out to achieve the goals of the course. These
objectives are to be achieved by the time the candidate completes the course. These
objectives may be considered under the following subtitles.

At the end of 36 months of training, the candidate should be able to:
KNOWLEDGE
 Describe aetiology, pathophysiology, periapical diagnosis and management of
common RestoratiNt situations, Endodontic situations that will include
contemporary management of dental caries, management of trauma and Pulpal
pathoses including Periodontal situations.
 Demonstrate understanding of basic sciences as relevant to Conservative/
Restorative dentistry and Endodontics.
 Identify social, economic, environmental and emotional determinants in a
given case or community and take them -into account for planning and
execution at individual and community levels.
 Ability- to master differential diagnosis and recognize conditions that may
require multidisciplinary approach or a clinical situation outside the realm of
the specialty, which he/she should be able to recognize and refer to appropriate
specialist.
 Update himself by self study and by attending basic and advanced courses,
conferences, seminars, workshops in the specialty of Conservative dentistry /
Endodontics / Dental Materials and Restorative Dentistry.
 Ability to teach, guide colleagues and other students
 Use information technology tools and carry out research both basic and clinical
with the aim of publishing his work and presenting the same at various
scientifi6 platforms.
SKILLS
 Take proper chair side history, examine the patient and perform essential
medical and dental diagnostic procedures and order as well as perform relevant

tests and interpret them to come to a reasonable diagnosis about the dental
conditions in general and Conservative dentistry/ Endodontists in particular.
And undertake complete patient monitoring including preoperative as well as
postoperative care of the patient.
 Perform all levels of restorative work and surgical and non-surgical
Endodontics including Endodontic endosseous implants, as well as
Endodontic- Periodontal surgical procedures as part of multi disciplinary
approach to clinical situation.
 Provide basic life saving support services in emergency situations.
 Manage acute pulpal and pulpal & periodontal situations and emergency
procedures.
 Have a thorough knowledge of INFECTION CONTROL MEASURES in the
dental clinical environment and laboratories.
HUMAN VALUES - ethical practice and communication abilities.
 Adopt ethical principles in all aspects of restorative and contemporary
Endodontics including non-surgical and surgical Endodontics.
 Professional honesty and integrity should be the top priority.
 Dental care has to be provided regardless of social status, cast, creed or religion
of the patient.
 Develop communication skills- in particular, the skill to explain various
options available in management and to obtain a true informed consent from
patient.
 Apply high moral and ethical standards while carrying on human or animal
research.

 He shall not carry out any heroic procedures and must know his limitations in
performing all aspects of restorative dentistry including Endodontics. Ask for
help from colleagues or seniors when required without any hesitation.
 Respect patient's rights and privileges including patient's right to information.
COURSE CONTENTS
ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE
It is globally recognized today that Conservative dentistry and Endodontics
covers basic knowledge of all restorative materials and materials associated with
Endodontics. It is also recognized that the area of Conservative dentistry includes
knowledge of dental caries and treatment modalities associated with management of
dental caries. Basic advanced knowledge of non-carious lesions of mineralized tissues
and of carious lesion is essential. Basic and advanced knowledge of biological basis
of Endodontics and management of all Endodontic situations, which includes all
aspects of diagnosis, treatment planning and treatment modalities are also mandatory.
An individual specializing in restorative dentistry should also have knowledge of
allied specialties like Periodontics/ Pedodontics & Preventive Dentistry.

TEACHING AND LEARNING ACTIVITIES
The three-year course is a full time one. He / she shall work in the institute as a
full time student. No student shall be permitted to do any kind of PRIVATE
PRACTICE attached to any clinic / nursing home or as a consultant. Each calendar
year / academic year shall be taken as one unit for the purpose of calculating
attendance.
Every student shall take part actively in learning and teaching activities during
each year as prescribed by the university/department/institution.
This should primarily include topic discussion at chair side.
1. LECTURES: There will be no formal lecture classes except in biostatistics /
anestheology/ computers and IT. Lectures are to be kept at a minimum. They may be
employed for teaching purposes. Lectures may be didactic or integrated.

2. JOURNAL CLUB: Recommended that they be held once a week. All PG students
are expected to participate actively and enter relevant details in logbook. The
candidate must make a presentation from the allotted journal(s) of selected articles at
least 10 times each year in the 2nd
and 3rd
years with a total of 20 presentations in 3
years.

3. SUBJECT SEMINAR: Recommended that they be held once a week. All PG
students are expected to participate actively and enter relevant details in logbook. The
candidate must make a seminar presentation, at least 5 each year in the 2 d and 3d
years, totally at least 10 seminars at the end of 3 years. Each student shall submit one
seminar on basic sciences typed after presentation at the end of I year. At the end of II
year and III year at least 3 months before examination shall submit 5 seminars each
year, typed bound and after presentation. He shall also submit library dissertation on a
chosen subject at the end of second year.
4. STUDENT SYMPOSIUM: recommended as an optional multidisciplinary
programme. Evaluation similar. to that for subject seminar.
5. CLINICAL POSTINGS: during I year, H year & III[ year: Dept of Conservative
Dentistry & Endodontics.
6. CLINICO PATHOLOGICAL CONFERENCE: At least shall attend and take part
in two such conferences in 1st
year and 2nd
year.

7. INTERDEPARTMENTAL MEETINGS: shall be held once a month with the Dean
of the institute chairing the meetings along with all heads of departments of
postgraduate departments.
8. TEACHING SKILLS: Maybe asked to attend short-term courses available in the
university. May also be asked to lead group discussions with UG students and also
may be asked to tale classes for undergraduate courses.
9. CONTINUING DENTAL EDUCATION PROGRAMMES: department shall
organize these programmes with the active cooperation of the heads of institutions on
a continuous basis
10. CONFERENCES / WORKSHOPS / ADVANCED COURSES: Students should
be encouraged not only to attend compulsorily the conferences/ workshops/ advanced
courses available but also should be encouraged to host and organize specialty
workshops conferences and advanced courses.
11. DISSERTATION: as per university regulations.
12. ROTATION & POSTING IN OTHER DEPARTMENTS:
During the 1st
year post graduate course students should undergo lecture programs in
Anatomy / Physiology / General pathology/ Microbiology/ and general surgery.
During 2nd
year, students may be exposed to Periodontics/ Paedodontia/ Radiology-15
days each, in addition to specialty posting in conservative dentistry and Endodontics.
During the 3rd
year- department of Conservative dentistry and Endodontics- full time
posting for 12 calendar months.
DISSERTATION / THESIS
1. The library dissertation should be submitted at the end of the first year.
2. The dissertation is aimed to train a postgraduate student in research methods and
techniques. It includes identification of a problem, formulation of a hypothesis,
search and review of literature, getting acquainted with recent advances,

designing of a research study, collection of data, critical analysis, comparison of
results and drawing conclusions.
3. Every candidate shall submit to University in the prescribed Profonna, a synopsis
of the proposed dissertation work,%ithin 6 months from the date of
commencement of the course either on or before the dates notified by the
university. The synopsis shall be sent through the proper channel.
4. Such synopsis will be reviewed and the disseration topic will be registered by the
University. No change in the dissertation topic or guide shall be made without
prior approval by the university.
5. The dissertation should be written under the following headings:
i. Introduction
ii. Aims or Objectives of the study

v. Results
vi. Discussion
vii. Conclusion
viii. Summary
ix. References
x. Tables
xi. Annexure
6. The written text of the dissertation shall not be less than 50 pages and shall not
exceed 150 pages excluding references, tables, questionnaires and other
checklists. It should be neatly typed in double line spacing on one side of paper
(A4 size, 8.27" x 11.69") and bound properly. Spiral binding should be avoided.
The dissertation shall be certified by the glide, head of the department and
head of the Institution.

7. Four copies of the dissertation thus prepared shall be submitted to the university,
six months before final examination on or before the dates notified by the
university.
8. The dissertation shall be valued by examiners appointed by the university.
Approval of dissertation work is an essential precondition for the candidate to
appear in the University Exam.
9. Guide: The academic qualification and teaching experience required for
recognition by this university as a guide for dissertation work be as per Dental
Council of India regulations, 1993.
A Co-Guide may be included provided the work requires substantial contribution
from sister department or from another dental / medical institution recognized for
teaching/ training by the university/ dental council of India The co-guide shall be
a recognized post graduate teacher.
10. Change of guide In the event of a registered guide leaving the college for any
reason or in the event of the death of guide, guide may be changed with prior
permission from the university.
EVALUATION
The evaluation of learning outcome of the trainees consists of:
a) Internal assessment (Formative evaluation)
b) University examination (Summative evaluation) for assessment of learning
outcome at the end of the course for award of degree.
A) INTERNAL ASSESSMENT
Is essential for monitoring learning progress through continuous appraisal and
regular assessment. It also helps teachers to evaluate students, students to evaluate
themselves, helps rationalize performance in the examination and to differentiate
between candidates of otherwise equal performance in the examination.

Formal evaluation is done by the staff of the department based on participation
of the students in various teaching/learning activities. Evaluation is structured on the
basis of checklists that evaluate these various aspects. Examples of such checklists
are given in Annexure I to serve as a guide for the assessment.
The learning outcomes to be assessed should include: (i) Personal Attitudes (ii)
Acquisition Of Knowledge (iii) Clinical And Operative Skills (iv) Teaching Skills (v)
Dissertation.
(i) Personal Attitudes: The essential items are

 Organizational ability
 Potential to cope with stressful situations and undertake responsibility

 To understand and communicate intelligibly with patients and others.
 To behave in a manner which establishes professional relationships with
patients and colleagues.

 A critical enquiring approach to the acquisition of knowledge.
(ii) Acquisition of knowledge : the methods comprise of "log book" which records
participation in various teaching / learning activities by the students. The number of
activities attended and the number in which presentations are made are to be recorded.
The logbook should periodically be validated by the supervisors. Some of the
activities to be listed include:joumal clubs, seminars/ s),mposia/ clinico-pathological
conferences.
(iii) Clinical and operative skills:

Day-to-day work: Skills in clinical programme should be assessed periodically. The
assessment should include the candidate's sincerity and punctuality, analytical ability
and communication skills.
Clinical meetings: Candidates should periodically present cases to his peers and
faculty members.
Operative skills: The candidate should be given graded responsibility to enable
learning by observation. The performance is assessed by the guide by direct
observation. Particulars are recorded in the student logbook.

(iv) Teaching skills:
Candidates should be encouraged to teach undergraduate students. The performance
should be based on assessment by the faculty members of the department and by
feedback from the undergraduate students.
(v) Dissertation in the department: Periodic presentations are to be made in the
department. Initially the topic selected is to be presented before submission to the
university for registration, again before finalization for critical evaluation and another
before final submission of the completed work.
All assessment must be periodic and by the department staff.
(vi) Periodic tests: Tests must be based on problem based short essay questions or
objective questions for assessment of theoretical knowledge. For the assessment of

clinical skills separate clinical examination be held using both long and short cases.
The minimum number of tests recommended are three, preferably at the end of I & 11
& HI months before completion of the course.
B) UNIVERSITY EXAMINATIONS:
(i) Eligibility: The following requirements should be fulfilled by every candidate to
become eligible to appear for final examination
Attendance, Progress and Conduct: Every student shall attend symposia,
seminars, conferences, journal review meetings, case presentation, clinics and lectures
during each year as prescribed by the department and not absent himself/ herself from
work without valid reasons.
Every student shall maintain a work diary/ logbook for recording his/her
participation in the training programmes. Special mention may be made of the
presentations by the candidate as well as details of clinical or laboratory procedures.
The work diary and log book shall be verified and certified by the head of the
department and the head of the institution and among other things forms the basis for
certifying satisfactory progress. The logbook if demanded, must be presented in the
university clinical or viva voce examination.
Every candidate should have fulfilled the minimum attendance requirement
prescribed in the Dental Council of India and University (80% of the training during
each academic year of the postgraduate course).
The university appointed examiners should have accepted the dissertation
work.
Any student who fails to complete the course in the manner stated above
should not be permitted to appear for the University Examinations.

EXERCISE I: Preparation of the post space for an anterior endodontically treated
tooth and obtain wax pattern
EXERCISE II: Prepare a lower or upper molar to receive a class 11 cast gold inlay
restoration / Obtain rubber base impression/ wax pattern / casting
EXERCISE III: Selection of case for molar Endodontics-Access cavity - estimation of
working length - biomechanical preparation- obturation
EXERCISE IV: Class 11 direct composite restoration in a posterior tooth up to
finishing
EXAMINERS: There shall be at least four examiners in each subject. Out of
them two shall be external examiners and two shall be internal examiners. The
qualification and teaching experience for appointment as an examiner shall be as laid
down by the Dental Council of India and the University.
There shall be at least 4 examiners. Out of them two shall be external

Criteria for declarinly as pass in University Examinations:
To pass in the University examination, a candidate shall secure in theory
examination, an aggregate of 50% of total marks prescribed for each paper, provided
the candidate has secured a minimum of 40% of total marks prescribed in each paper,
and 50% of the total marks prescribed for practical/ clinical training including viva
voce examination. Further, a candidate shall secure the minimum 50% of marks in
each of the two components, i.e., theory and practical/clinical including viva-voce

separately in the same examination to be declared as pass. A candidate securing less
than 50% marks as described above shall be declared to have failed in the
examination.

RECOMMENDATIONS
ADMISSION TO POST GRADUATE COURSE
The selection for postgraduate courses should be strictly on the basis of
academic merit. This should be applicable to admissions in government, non-
government and private institutions. Merit should be determined by competitive

entrance tests conducted by universities or and agency authorized by the Government
of India, preferably the latter.
Reservation of seats shall be as per the policy of Government of India.
The Dental Council of India (DCI) should make serious efforts to make
aptitude testing also a part of the entrance tests.
NUMBER OF SEATS
Me Government of India, Dental Council of India and the State Governments
should make a dental manpower survey and assess the requirement of each state and
agree to train only such number as is required to meet the need. In the interim period,
there should a moratorium to the total number of candidates admitted for PG course in
Conservative dentistry/ Endodontics. It is recommended that not more than 6-8
students should be admitted per year in an institute for MDS Conservative Dentistry/
Endodontics, to maintain quality.
DURATION
Minimum period as fixed by the Dental Council was considered inadequate to
train an endodontist to practice independently. Therefore a three-year training period
for Postgraduate course was recommended.
