Identify technology tools that support building
reading skills and explain how these tools are
beneficial to students.
Importance of Reading
Literacy skills are needed in almost every facet of
life.
Reading and comprehending instructions
Reading road signs
Completing job applications
Reading and comprehending important legal and
personal documents
Reading skills open doors for better jobs, higher
salaries, and higher socio-economic status.

Levels of Language and
Discourse
Words (Parts of Speech, word composition, word meaning)
Syntax (noun-phrases, verb phrases, prepositional phrases)
Textbase- (semantic meaning, explicit propositions or clauses)
Situation model- (images and mental simulations of events,
situations conveyed in text)
Genre & rhetorical structure- (theme, moral, or point of
discourse; narrative, persuasive, and expository writing)
Pragmatic communication- (goals of the author, attitudes
and beliefs such as humor and sarcasm)

Reading Proficiency
Coh-Metrix - a tool that analyzes text on levels 1-5
of the Levels of Language and Discourse
Degrees of Reading Power (DRP) & Lexile Scores
- tools used to assess reading complexity and
assigns a number to text based on their difficulty
Computer Interventions for
Reading Instruction
iSTART- web-based training program to enhance
reading comprehension
A2i- web-based evaluation program
Conclusion
In conclusion, reading is an essential skill that is needed
to be productive and successful in our society. Therefore,
it is important for educators to provide the appropriate
support and instruction to help today's students become
skillful readers. Furthermore, it is important that teachers
understand the levels of reading in order to properly
diagnose reading problems and select the appropriate
technology tools to meet those specific problems. In
addition, there are various types of technology to support
and enhance reading skills in the classroom.
