Objectives:
identify the different strategies for reading

strategies in reading; and
discuss the relevance of reading
Reading Strategies
“Reading strategies” is the broad term used to describe
the planned and explicit actions that help readers
translate print to meaning. Strategies that improve
decoding and reading comprehension skills, benefit every
student but are essential for beginning readers, struggling
readers, and English Language Learners.

Activating prior
knowledge
It is a pre-reading strategy, and it is useful in
getting you to focus on the content; it
prepares your mind to interpret the
information in the text.
We do this by brainstorming on the topic of
the reading text.
Predicting
This is another pre-reading strategy that prepares your
mind to absorb, interpret, check, and confirm
information.
Studies have shown that good readers are mentally
prepared to read a text; they have certain expectations
that they confirm, reject, or refine as they read.
Skimming
a method of rapidly moving the eyes over text
with the purpose of getting only the main ideas
and a general overview of the content.
Means quickly reading the text once to get the
general meaning. This requires speed reading skills.
This allows you to familiarize yourself with the
text.
Scanning
this means reading rapidly but carefully while
picking out certain keywords or phrases. This
allows you to pick out specific information
from a text.
Useful for picking out key learning points when
you read for learning.
When scanning, you must...
Know what you're looking for.
Know what you're looking for.
Let your eyes float rapidly down the page until
you find the word or phrase you want.
Read the surrounding material carefully.
(When your eye catches one of your
keywords)
Inferring/Guessing the
meaning of unfamiliar words
is what you do when you try and make
sense of words you have not seen
before, or of the way words are put
together in a text (context).
Why do we need to
familiarize ourselves
with the different
reading strategies?
·Familiarizing ourselves with different reading
strategies is essential because it can significantly
improve our reading comprehension, efficiency,
and overall learning experience.
Further, familiarizing ourselves with different
reading strategies empowers us to become more
effective readers, enabling better comprehension,
time management, adaptability, and active
engagement with the texts we encounter.
