The world is built by tens of thousands of communities and its participation is indispensable to the
world development. Community's development depends on the economic and progress of the world.
The subject of community is people. Therefore, the communities even the world cannot prosper
without the sustainable people. This article focuses on sustainable people, economy, education and
China's experience in community development and meanwhile explains the relationship between
community, community development（CD） and community economic development（CED）.
Everyone in the world belongs to a group or an organization. People stay together to share time and
all other benefits, keep same thinking and values and live in their own place, that is how community
naturally created. Different individual ability, local culture and environment can lead to different
communities. For instance, community economy in east, middle, or west region of Canada has big
differences because they develop in different level. Some of the people in the community may be
wealthy and highly educated, while the others are living in high–poverty and lower educated

Understanding community and social networks is important in the Child and Youth Counsellor
(CYC) field in order to help create and encourage positive communities and networks for the youth
within the CYC care. Community and social networks are important for self–esteem, sense of
belonging, and overall happier and healthier individuals. Understanding the communities or social
networks within an individual's life will assist in the appropriate goal making and action planning in
order to meet the individual's needs. As described by Oxford Dictionary, a community is "a group of
people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common" where as a social
network is "a network of social interactions and personal relationships" Examples of a community
include neighbourhood, church or place of employment and examples of social network includes

Despite this traditional definition of a social network, it is also currently described as "a dedicated
website or other application which enables users to communicate with each other by posting

Life in the city is often chaotic and fast–paced. It is as quick as a television dinner. Often, people are
forgetting the art of appreciation. Things go unnoticed like a pebble under a shoe, like sparkling

J. Kennedy poem Death of a window Washer explores the social side of human nature with its
poetry. The irony of this works attests more of the apathetic nature of people rather than a
socializing community or another urban area. "He dropped the way you'd slam an obstinate sash.
His split belt like a shade unrolling, flapping". Instead of the sentences being overly flowery like
Goldberger's essay, they are direct and blunt which gives this poem its own eye–catching effect.
Additionally, there is a common misinterpretation that the nameless, window washer committed
suicide by jumping off the ledge. This misinterpretation could arise from the window washer's death
being viewed by a person in the city or because the individuals receive more attention in the story
"He'd made the city pause briefly to suffer". Initially, readers believe the washer's death pains the
city. However, by the next line "His taking ample room for once. In rather a tedious while the rinsed
street, left to dry". the citizens are more affected by the problems the window washer caused than
actual care or concern for him. His untimely death is as bothersome as stain on a shirt; hard to rinse
off. They are left with displeasure of dealing with his death. The people "suffer" as they impatiently

Introduction Community development (CD) has been playing an important role within the society as
it is a critical practice that identifies and attempts to address unequal relations of power (Forde &
Lynch, 2015). In CD, social capital is an important term as it refers to the networks and norms that
enable collective action. In general, social capital is the level of trust between members within the
community. Social workers need to understand and empower the social capital to strengthen the
community through collective action based on the existing resources. The CD involves in a
continuing process in which maximises the opportunities for people to work collaboratively to
identify and fulfil their needs based on the existing assets within the community (Kenny, 2011). As

Organizations tend to face many unique challenges. One of these challenges, especially in schools,
is building a sense of community. Thomas J. Sergiovanni's Building Community in Schools, first
published in 1994, asserts that in order for schools to improve in any and all aspects of the school
environment, the school should first place an emphasis on community building. Sergiovanni was a
professor of education at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas where he taught in the school
leadership program and in the teacher education program. He worked in the education field from the
time of his graduation from the State University of New York in 1958 until his retirement in 2009.
During that time, he authored more than 30 textbooks and journal articles.
Throughout Building Community in Schools, Sergiovanni repeatedly refers to two Russian terms:
gemeinschaft (community) and gesellschaft (society). He uses these terms in order to better describe
the community building process within schools. The main theme of this book is that every person
within a school plays an important role in how effective the school can become by building on the
basic premise that a team can accomplish much more than an individual. The author touches on how
we are losing a sense of community and why this is not in the best interest of our children. He also
expounds on the importance of community building, not only in schools, but why it is essential to
our development as human beings. This book is a must read for any educator as it gives great insight
into the importance of community in education.
The book starts with a preface in which Sergiovanni builds the framework for the importance of
community in schools. Sergiovanni states that when a school has a sense of community it "lifts both
teachers and students to higher levels of understanding, commitment, and performance–beyond the
reaches of the shortcomings and difficulties they face in their everyday lives." Once again, this is the
basic premise for the entire book: that more can be accomplished by a team than an individual.
The beginning of the book focuses on how community loss has come about, how it is affecting our
schools, and why it is important to rebuild community.

Adult Education : A Social Movement
Adult education can be associated with or defined as a social movement because interactions within
the movement collectively represent "organized activities that encourages social change" (Lange,
Spencer, 2014, p. 13). Walter (2007) notes that adult education programming "brings individuals
together in a common cause...strengthening social networks, common identity, and commitment to
action in the process" (p. 250). Old (i.e. traditional) social movements such as organized labour or
trade unions were long considered to be change agents, as they "engaged in a variety of educational

A Resident Assistant lives on the same floor as their residents and assists them in any way needed.
For example, a resident may be going through some personal struggles and doesn't know who to talk

Located in Olneyville is one of the community's best assets. One Neighborhood builders, a
community development corporation also referred to as a CDC. Like many other CDC's One
Neighborhood builders is a not–for–profit community action group. One Neighborhood builders
takes pride is creating affordable housing. Their mission "is to work with residents to build a safe,
healthy, and stable community. We accomplish our mission through four lines of business: (1)
creation and preservation of affordable housing, and development of commercial real estate to spur
economic development, (2) ONE Neighborhood Works – our social enterprise which prepares young
people for work while providing landscaping and maintenance services in the neighborhood's public
spaces, (3) individual asset building to prepare families for homeownership, and (4) community
building and organizing to strengthen the neighborhood's social fabric" (One Neighborhood
Builders, 2016, p. 1).
Upon walking into the main office, located at 66 Chaffee Street I noticed a friendly receptionist
sitting toward the door to assist anyone walking in. She was able to tell me a little about what was
going on in the office and the services offered. At the time of my visit a workshop in Spanish was
being given to residents about fighting predatory lending. Other services offered are tax preparation
called VITA which offers free tax preparations by a volunteer who is trained through the IRS to

My Service Learning Experience
Aside from the instances in my service learning experience that I was able to relate to sociocultural
factors and the impact that these factors had in her schooling, the experience of my student in my
service learning project was that she was there to be tutored in order to expand her academic
success. Both her and her sister attended the after school tutoring session each time I went. Her
mother always dropped them off, and after the tutoring session, I would discuss with the mother
Annie's progress for that session, what we did for that session, and things we were going to further
work on for our next session. At my last session, Annie's mother made the effort to tell me how
Annie had recently been announced as the highest scoring student on a particular exam and that she
was excelling more in school. This conversation particularly struck me because it made me believe
that in some small way, I contributed to some of that success that she had because of the intimate
relationship we had and how we connected and learned together as a team. This is an instance in my
service learning that affected me and made me truly believe that as a future educator, having a
culturally relevant pedagogy and connecting with all my students on a personal level will help them

Community Building Reflection
Ever since I started working in the education field, I have always been a big advocate of family
involvement and building partnerships between teachers, students, and families. When I started
working as a teacher, I right away got involved with our parent engagement committee. Our school
has done a wonderful job at meeting the standards that involve community and family involvement
(Missouri Leader Standard 4, and Professional Standards for Educational Leaders Standard 8). We
have a great partnership with our before and after school program, and part of that partnership was
built the year before, as I worked for LINC, and knew I was going to be transitioning into the
classroom. I worked on making sure that partnership was established, and as a LINC coordinator, I
wanted to make sure our partnership would benefit the school, the program, and our families.
Currently, we have great families who attend our events, and we also have a great school, with very
supportive staff who is whiling to stay after school for events, but our enrollment has decreased. We
have small class sizes, compared to our district, and while this is great for learning, we are
struggling with recruitment.
Knowing that we need to recruit, our school has started taking actions to bring more people from the
community into our school. Many community members do not know that for students to attend our
school, they just need to be within the KCPS boundaries. Families also have the assumption that you
can only attend our school if you speak Spanish, but we benefit more from having English speakers
in our school. Lately we are trying to get our name out to the KCPS community. Part of that is
attending more events, connecting with churches, recruitment events, and just simply passing out
flyers about our school to people we meet.
Last week I attended a Shark Tank Teacher Edition, where my co–teacher and I presented to
community members a project about getting funding for Spanish books. This was also a great
opportunity to get our school's name out to various stakeholders. We had a booth with information
about our dual language program, and ways people can help our program grow. Later that week we

Being involved groups is essential to everyday living and many of us will belong to a variety of
groups at the same time. For example, families, social, sports, support, learning management and
committees groups. A group is "a small, face–to–face collection of persons who interact to
accomplish some purpose" (Schriver, 1998). In other words, a group is collection of diverse people
with common characteristics or purpose. A group can consist of any number of people from any
number of races, ethnicities, culture, age, and or religious background. People involved in groups

that attend Delaware State University. The Department of Housing and Residential Education hire
RAs, SRA's, and RD'S to help execute the plans for providing a health living environment by giving

level, assist them in their studies, and provide encouragement in the tasks they want to accomplish,

I chose as my subject University of Cincinnati, the dining halls, the workers there, their personal
communities, the interactions between the workers and the students. and lastly, I am interested in the
workers that cross the bridge between worker and student and take advantage of the free classes. At
first I was interested mostly in the interactions between students and workers. Every time i walk into
a UC dining hall I am struck by the sense of community among the workers. Its so full of energy I
always want to be apart of it. By observation I want to better understand what its like to belong to
this specific community. Like all discourse communities, there is a common vernacular or dialogue,
that I would like to understand a little more clearly. I want to learn more about it, and understand
better the work life balance of this commune of labourers. And how UC helps to better the
environment. Does UC take steps to make the environment comfortable and enjoyable, and do the
employees enjoy their job? Because what the workers get out of their jobs directly affects the
community in and around UC and Cincinnati at large. I learned more about the jobs and the
university's role in these peoples lives. I would like to see how the university helps to improve these
workers lives. The university provides over 15,000 jobs to the Cincinnati area, and is one of the

1. MRC Community Participation The opportunities for community building within MRC are
abundant and seem to never end. This chance to connect, build, and maintain relationships with

Did you know that 35 out of 57 waste sites in the eastern part of Los Angeles were located in zip
codes with at least half the population consisting of Latinos? (Pulido 21) This is a direct and
apparent representation of environmental racism in our country. In particular, its existence could be
closely observed in the recent dispute of an urban farmland in South Central Los Angeles. Frankly,
environmental racism had little effect on the actual dissolution of the South Central farm, as it was
an issue of property rights. Instead, environmental racism played a significant role in the
confrontation process that led to the closure by excluding minority groups, especially Latinos, from
decision processes and obstructing their effort to conserve the farmland.
Twenty–five years ago, the city of Los Angeles obtained the South Central farmland under eminent
domain with the intention of building a waste incinerator. While this project failed to proceed, 400
community members were given the permission to farm the land. It provided a lot of support to the
community, which is inhabited mostly by low–income minorities. While aiding the farmers
themselves, it also brought monetary and psychological benefits to the neighborhood. Suing the city

Putnam's article, "Bowling Alone: America's Declining Social Capital," his begins with the
argument that America's social capital is declining and the strength of American societies have
