RELATIONSHIPS
REVIEWING RELATIONSHIPS: When we share our time, feelings, ideas, goals and our body with others, a sense of intimacy develops. With intimacy comes love, trust, approval, empathy, affection, support and commitment.  The following are some things that relationships can provide individuals; Give support, gain love, feel secure valued and accepted, develop effective relationships, receive help and guidance and meet new people. People with more positive relationships usually feel better about their lives and their self esteem is improved. It has been found that people who have quality relationships generally make better choices when it comes to health and quality family relationships help with teenagers maturity and resilient behaviours.  It has also been found that a lack of social support and close relationships have a higher possibility of suffering heart disease.
How do you know when relationships are not working; Overtime relationships change and problems can start to occur. Problems and conflict can at times cause a rethink about the relationship and the possibility of getting out of the relationship. As relationships change it is vital that both partners communicate and are honest about the changes along with acknowledging the changes.
Consequences of changing relationships: When changes in a relationship occur the individual may feel an array of emotions. One of the major feelings and emotions is grief. Grief for young people can be quite negative to a teenagers development.  Some of the emotions felt can also lead to physical reactions. Eg chest pain, lack of energy, feeling weak, difficulty sleeping, loss of appetite, crying and wanting to shy away from social experiences. Different people express their emotions and grief differently, especially teenagers. The more resilience skills that a person has the better they will be able to deal with loss or grief.
The pattern of grief First step: Denial Step 2: Anger Step 3: Blame Step 4: Intense sadness Step 5: Resignation Step 6: Acceptance Working through grief can be a positive thing, due to the coping skills and resilience that can help in other life changes or events.
Sexual Relationships: Different individuals look for different qualities when searching for a sexual partner. Some individuals seek love, support and intimacy and others a more physical attraction. It is important to remember that any sexual relationship still requires both parties to live up to the rights and responsibilities of the relationship. Different influential aspects play a role in why individuals especially teenagers take up sexual activity and begin to search for sexual partners. Some examples are the media, social groups, peer pressure and family beliefs.
Understanding personal sexuality; Sexuality is an interrelationship between a person’s sexual identity, behaviour and orientation. So Personal sexuality = sexual orientation + sexual behaviour + sexual identity Sexuality remember effects all of our lives, every day sexuality plays a part in our decisions, life and the way people treat us. Sexual orientation relates to a person’s basic sexual attraction to other people.  Classifications of sexual orientation are; Heterosexual  = desires the opposite sex Homosexual  = desires the same sex Bisexual  = desires both sexes Our sexual orientation is an integral part of our identity. A person’s sexual orientation is not a choice, it is impacted by many things and spans from a young age to middle age and beyond sometimes. Lifestyle, behaviors and the environment the individual develops in can play a role in sexual orientation. It is up to the individual whether they choose to act on the sexual orientation (coming out). This can be an extremely difficult process depending on the social constructs of the environment they are in. eg school, home, work
Gender identity: When we are born we are born one sex or the other, however as we grow  gender construction  starts to and we begin to learn from society and social behaviors. The way we act, dress and who we hang around all impacts on our Gender Identity. Transgender relates to a swap in gender over time, this can be achieved through operations and hormone injections in today’s society. Transvestites are still not fully integrated in society however they are becoming more and more accepted as time goes on. Homosexuals, transgender and bisexuals often suffer whats termed, vilification = any public act that may incite or encourage hatred of a certain group. E.g, graffiti, verbal abuse & posters Discrimination  = is treating a person unfairly or less favorably because they belong to a particular group. Homophobia  = is a fear or hatred of homosexual people or alternate sexualities. It is expressed through negative attitudes and behaviors. E.g abuse, no respect or fear of a person.
Research part 1: Research the need for consent in a sexual relationship in Australia??? Find out the laws, rights and responsibilities in relation to consent for people in a relationship. Find the definition of sexual assault? And explain how it may impact on a relationship. Give examples!
Safe Behaviours : Safe behaviours involve individuals acting in ways that not only protect your physical health, but also look after your emotional health. The main problem or danger in sexual relationships are STI (Sexually Transmitted Infections)  When thinking about sexual behaviors we need to think about activities that are safe, safer and unsafe.
Research part 2: Research types of contraception using the headings safe, safer & unsafe. Look up the Australian Secondary Students survey and highlight the trends of yr 10 -12 students in relation to sexual activity? Look up safe practices when entering into a sexual relationship, e.g dry humping, condom use and prevention of STI’S? Outline the practice of putting on a condom and make points on why this information would be beneficial to people who are considering entering a relationships. Research BLOOD BORNE VIRUSES = ??????? Who’s at risk???? How does it’s effects affect people’s health and decision making processes???
Research part 3: Make a comprehensive list of some STI’S that affect Australians?
STI’S can be prevented by; The three c’s   Communication = ??? Condoms =??? Checkups =??? Explain what these three c’s mean!
