What Is the Europe Challenge?
2013 was the first year for the Europe Challenge! This annual
event will inspire and challenge Europe's best and brightest for
geospatial solutions that serve the European and International
community. And do this in ways that address the real needs of
local, regional, national or international interests.
There were two ways to win. Either as a university team project or
as a professional team project.
University Team Project (text of the Call)
Build an application that serves the INSPIRE Directive and uses
NASA's open source virtual globe technology, World Wind. To do
this you must establish a team of three to five students, from a
single university, with any mix of undergraduate, graduate and
PhD students. Each team must have a mentor. The mentor can
be a professor, an associate or assistant professor, or an official
lecturer at the same university as the team. Together decide,
design and build a geospatial application that serves local,
regional, national or international interests guided by the INSPIRE
Directive,
Professional Team Project (text of the Call)
Small businesses can compete in the professional category with
the same criteria as above only there is no limit on team
members or any mentor requirement. This is a great opportunity
to showcase your company’s talents, while providing premier
value to the European community.

• Show a bird’s-eye 3D view of air-quality
data acquired at time intervals from
multiple sensors
• Sensors are connected with a Triangular
Irregular Network (TIN) to cover the area of
interest.
• Data are represented geometrically and
colorized to easily recognize high-to-low
values.
• Areas affected by a potential risk for health

Urban Traffic Visual Analytics Simulator
The goal is to develop a highly interactive
visual analytics system helping urban

Real-Time Geospatial Renderer by Gaea+
Extends the World Wind Java core with features
crucial for advanced real-time rendering of
geospatial information
Optimized Render-to-Texture capabilities enable
visualization of large vector datasets.
A shader has been built directly into the render-loop,
enabling custom-oriented visual effects, deferred
rendering and flexible support for WFS and GML.
It allows to build mission-critical emergency
response systems with special features (e.g.
management capability of distributed massive

Simulation Tool to Predict Wildfire Behavior
This tool displays the potential movement of
wildfire through the terrain via a particle system.
The Wildfire Management Tool (WMT) introduces a
new way to analyze and predict wildfire behavior.
Instead of a static display, WMT animates the
paths that fire will take through the terrain.
A high density or concentration of paths called
‘fire highway.’
As the situation changes, WMT identifies new fire
highways as well as areas where fire highways
can be intercepted to stop the fire spread. Areas
that are ‘slow fire’ paths are good for safe access
and present windows of opportunity for control of
fast moving fire highways. Details:

Multidimensional Viewer allows users to present
3D information from different data sources.
Large datasets of scalar or vector information,

PoliCrowd – A Social World Wind Platform
PoliCrowd is a 3D participatory application
allowing users to populate their geospatial
information as represented on the virtual
globe.
Registered users can upload Points Of Interest
(POIs) through their mobile devices and
participatively interact with POIs on the
globe, adding textual and multimedia
content (e.g., images, audios & videos).
Users can also add WMS layers to populate a
catalogue of geographic content useful for
scenario customization. Different projects
can also be created, saved and shared to
promote community participation.
