Conventions of real media productsMy magazine challenges other Real Life Music Magazines, because it is the first of its kind. There is no other Drum and Bass Music Magazine. In normal magazines, if a gig was reviewed, it would normally feature a lot of photos of the band. However with Drum and Bass, a big part of their concerts are the scale of the crowd. To show this I have very few pictures of the DJs or MCs and generally have pictures of the crowd. Another way my magazine is different to conventional magazines is because many magazine talk about the band as well as reviewing their gig. However Drum and Bass gigs normally feature seven to eight different artists.
The Audience of RemixThe main Audience of Remix is in their late teens, both genders, with an interest in Drum and Bass. My magazine appeals to this audience because of the changed colours, such as the florescent blues, greens against dark backgrounds. This represents the bright lasers and glow sticks which are commonly seen at Raves and Drum and Bass gigs. Unfortunately due to the lack of choice, I was unable to pick a font more suiting to Drum and Bass without it being illegible. So I choose a plain, but easy to read font.
What I have learnt Photoshop – I have never used Photoshop before this. Although it was helpful, I found it hard to manipulate images in the way I wanted. But it could crop images a lot better then Fireworks.Fireworks – I had only used Fireworks a few times before, this course was challenge . Due to this again I had limitations on what I really wanted to do.
What I have learntPhotography – Having rarely taken a professional photograph Although Technology helped, in some cases it limited what I could do, for example I wanted to place a silhouette of a crowd over the cover image, but due to a bad help tool, I could not find out how.
Attraction of the audience The colours used such as the Florescent blue and green with the bright white against the black background are reminiscent of the rave scene. The images mainly show the crowd which is, unlike many genres, a large part of the performance, with the DJ reacting to how the crowds mood is.
Attraction of the Audience The mastheads design is similar to a the how many titles of club albums are designed, instantly associating many people with the club / dance scene. The front cover image is of well known MC ( A vocalist that accompanies the DJ) . MC’s rarely do performances outside the Club / Dance scene , so they are heavily associated with it.
Who would distribute my media product? My magazine would probably be published by a small publishers. This is because the magazine is aimed at a niche audience, and wouldn’t appeal to a large audience unlike other magazines such as Kerrang! Or Mojo. The publisher might also choose not to sell Remix nation wide, as in some areas of the country there are few venues that play live. It may only be sold in major cities such as London, , Glasgow or Dublin, as these cities are popular spots for international main stream DJ’s
Social GroupsRemix shows two main social groups, The Audience and the DJ’sThe Audience is shown in the images and in the reviews to be fun, easy going and just there to have fun. Although most of the time this is the case, Sometimes gigs can be spoilt by members of the audienceDJ’s are also shown to a perfect role model. However, in today's society, it is rare that artists do things just because of their love of music.
TechnologyUsing programs Like Fireworks and Photoshop improved my magazine dramatically. But I had limited knowledge on how to use such programs, which limited what I could do to my magazine. When using Photoshop, I encountered many problems such as if I saved a picture, I could not edit any previous changes the next time I opened it.
Technology Photoshop did however allow me to use vector images, such as the pattern behind the photo on the cover. This added a unique look, and looked a lot better then a plain colour. Camera’s were a key part of creating my magazine. Having used a camera only a few times before, I learnt a lot about using them. A slight limitation is that many of my photo’s were taken at live performances, where the timing needed to perfect when taking a picture.
Audience FeedbackAfter showing my magazine to a group of 10, who all are part of my target audience, 7 of them thought it was a good magazine considering the limitations of technology and that I was aiming at a niche audience, so I had few real magazines to gain inspiration from. The other 3, felt that the layout and images taken were basic, but with better thought could have been greatly improved. The ‘Best’ parts of the magazine included the front cover, the colours chosen and the layout of the double page spread. The ‘worst’ parts of the magazine included the text in the double page spread and in some places, poor choice of images.
My viewsCover – I could have improved the layout and choice of image. I would have liked to had a silhouette but was unable to because of lack of experience with fireworks and Photoshop. Contents – Greatly improved from the original, the final piece the could have been improved with a better font at the top and better layout. Double page spread – The Gig review could have been better, but the layout is perfect
