Representation Representation is about: • How social groups, different subcultures, occupations, ages, social classes, races and places are portrayed in the media. • How audiences interpret these portrayals. Remember any media text PRESENTS a version of REALITY. Therefore when considering a social group in the media text (Gender/age etc...) we get to understand how the social group is being RE-PRESENTED by the media it. All social groups can be represented in different ways. There are different types of representation: Stereotype Challenge to a stereotype Traditional Modern Realist Anti realist Exaggerated Watch the clip of The Inbetweeners and discuss and comment upon camera, editing, sound, mise en scene. - 2. 2. What is the target audience? The target audience is both genders from ages 15-35 3. Does the genre of the show and the target audience influence how the characters are represented in any way? For example; are the representations stereotyped or exaggerated? Describe and explain below. Yes because the teenage lads are stereotyped as immature whilst the girls are seen to be far more mature with the way they behave. The boys can’t seem to understand how to behave around girls. 4. Considering representation of GENDER, how are males represented in the clip? ( a good way to start with this is to make a list of nouns and adjectives i.e. : Students, teenagers, Playful, coarse, boisterous) The males are represented as immature, childish and silly. 5. How are females represented in the clip? ( again consider nouns and adjectives first) Mature, objectified, 6. Finally write a brief summary of how The Inbetweeners clip represents the social group of GENDER. The clip represents the guys with exaggeration for e.g. exaggerating how un composed they are around girls. Whereas the girls are represented as mature and complete uninterested in the guys.
