Farming in California requires a large amount of water, especially for crops like rice that need flooded fields. Rice farming uses around 150,000 hectare meters of irrigation per field, which is about ten times more water than other crops. A significant amount of the water used for rice evaporates due to California's sunny climate, with around 45,000 hectare meters lost to evapotranspiration in 2004. Better regulation of water transportation and use could help reduce water waste from farming.
