Resource centres for educatonal technology
CIET
 Central Institute Of Educational Technology(CIET), a
constituent unit of NCERT, came into existence in the
year 1984 with the merger of Center for Educational
Technology and Department of Teaching Aids. CIET is a
premiere national institute of educational technology.
Its major aim is to promote utilization of educational
technologies viz. radio,TV, films, Satellite
communications and cyber media either separately or in
combinations. The institute undertakes activities to
widen educational opportunities, promote equity and
improve quality of educational processes at school level.
 The University Grants Commission (UGC) of India is a
statutory body set up by the Indian Union government
in accordance to the UGC Act 1956under Ministry of
Human Resource Development, and is charged with
coordination, determination and maintenance of
standards of higher education. It provides recognition to
universities in India, and disburses funds to such
recognised universities and colleges. Prof. Ved Prakash is
the incumbent Chairman of UGC, India. Its headquarters
is in New Delhi, and six regional centres in Pune, Bhopal,
Kolkata, Hyderabad, Guwahati and Bangalore.
 The Indira Gandhi National Open University
(IGNOU), established by an Act of Parliament in 1985,
has continuously striven to build an inclusive knowledge
society through inclusive education. It has tried to
increase the Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) by offering
high-quality teaching through the Open and Distance
Learning (ODL) mode.
SIET
 The state Institute of Educational Technology, SIET was
constituted by Government of India in all the State with
an intention to promote the level of learning and also to
educate the student’s with the help of Radio and
Television. SIET Kerala is the latest in the array of 7 SIET
in the Country. Department of Education, Ministry of
Human Resources Development, Government of India.
SIET Kerala was constituted under the Travancore
Literary Scientific and Charitable Societies Act 1951 on
08.09.1999 as an autonomous society.
 The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) formerly
known as National Open School (NOS) was established
in November,1989 as an autonomous organization in
pursuance of National Policy on Education 1986 by the
Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD),
Government of India. NIOS is providing a number of
Vocational, Life Enrichment and community oriented
courses besides General and Academic Courses at
Secondary and Senior Secondary level. It also offers
Elementary level Courses through its Open Basic
Education Programmes (OBE).
AVRC & EMRC
 AVRC: Audio Visual Research Centre provides valuable
resource material for higher education and mass
communication. MCRC Mass Communication Research
Centre is a premier media institution in India by UGC.
 EMRC : it is the constant endeavor of EMRCs to get the
best teachers from across the country to deliver high
quality lectures to be telecast on Gyandarshan and Vyas,
the 24 hour higher educational channel. With the
advent of internet, the activities of EMRC has also
diversified, in addition to the educational television
programmes, it is also active in developing e-content
and e-learning packages for web based education and
webcasting through the National Knowledge Network.
UGC - CEC
 The Consortium for Educational
Communication popularly known as CEC is one of the
Inter University Centres set up by the University Grants
Commission of India. It has been established with the
goal of addressing the needs of Higher Education
through the use of powerful medium of Television along
with the appropriate use of emerging Information
Communication Technology (ICT).
 EDUSAT is the satellite exclusively devoted to meet the
demands of educational sector. It was launched on
September20, 2004 by Indian Space Research
Organization (ISRO) to meet ever increasing demand for
an interactive satellite-based distance education system
for the country. It has revolutionized classroom teaching
through IP based technology. EDUSAT has five KU band
transponders providing spot beams, one KU beam
transponder providing national beam and six extended
C-band transponders providing national coverage
beams.
 IT@School is a project of Department of General
Education, Government of Kerala, setup in 2001, to
foster the IT education in schools and which on a longer
term would facilitate ICT enabled education in the state.
The Project is now been implemented from 5th to 12th
Standards in the state covering as many as 8000 schools.
An estimated 50 lakhs students and 2 lakhs teachers are
now part of this project who have benefited from ICT
enabled education. Today, the Project is on the verge of
completing its 10th year of operation and it has a strong
network of 160 Master Trainers and 5600 School IT Co-
ordinators statewide, who are school teachers
themselves.
 Akshaya, an innovative project implemented in the State
of Kerala aimed at bridging the digital divide, addresses
the issues of ICT access, basic skill sets and availability of
relevant content. Quality ICT dissemination and service
delivery facilities (‘Akshaya Centres’) are set up within a
maximum of 2 kilometers for any household and
networked leveraging entrepreneurship.
 Information and Library Network (INFLIBNET) Centre is
an autonomous Inter-University Centre of the University
Grants Commission (UGC) of India. It is a major National
Programme initiated by the UGC in March 1991 with its
Head Quarters at Gujarat University Campus,
Ahmedabad. Initially started as a project under the
IUCAA, it became an independent Inter-University
Centre in June 1996.
