Resources Sharing
JAN VINCENT M. SABROSO
Introduction

The so-called ‘Information Revolution’
has made Libraries around the world to
adopt new philosophies and technologies
for information dissemination and also
reduce the cost of information.
Introduction
Libraries have realized that although they are
well funded, it is difficult to acquire all the materials
needed by the clientele. In fact partnership and
cooperation in local, national and international
have become enviable for all libraries. In achieving
resource sharing/library cooperation is through the
establishment of consortium over networks.
Phases of Development
FIRST PHASE: SEVERAL LIBRARIES COME TOGETHER FOR

THE MUTUAL BENEFIT OF THE RESPECTIVE USERS
– LIBRARY COOPERATION/ RESOURCE
SHARING

SECOND PHASE: LIBRARIES ARE LINKED TOGETHER WITH
THE HELP OF ICT
– LIBRARY NETWORK

THIRD PHASE: LIBRARIES COME TOGETHER TO ACQUIRE
AND SHARE E-RESOURCES
– LIBRARY CONSORTIUM
Resource Sharing
Resource sharing is a mode of library
operation whereby all or part of the library
functions are shared in common among several
libraries,
Resource Sharing
According to Allen kent the goals are to
provide a positive effect on the library user in
terms of access to more material or services and
providing level service at less cost, increased
service at level cost or much more service at less
cost than if undertaken individually.
Resource Sharing

Maximize the availability of
materials and services at the
minimum expense.
Areas of Resource Sharing
Inter-library loan
Cooperative acquisition
Specialized purchasing programs
Centralized processing
Areas of Resource Sharing
Shared cataloguing
Sharing of bibliographical data
Centralized periodical collection for
loan purposes
Cooperative microfilming
Areas of Resource Sharing
Preparation and maintenance of
union catalogue and union list of
serials
Exchange of publications
Exchange of expertise.
Resource Sharing Through Networks

In the past two decades, information
technology has made significant progress.
The current state of information handling is
indeed sufficient to support and
encourage the sharing of resources
among libraries.
Resource Sharing Through Networks
The pace of technological improvement
shows no signs of abatement and libraries will
find it rewarding to explore the realm of
networking possibilities that this new
technology makes feasible.
Resource Sharing Through Networks
Especially, the present decade has seen a
greatly renewed interest in library cooperation
and mutual benefits, prominently at national
and international levels.
SOME IMPORTANT ASSUMPTIONS OF
RESOURCE SHARING.
SOME IMPORTANT ASSUMPTIONS OF RESOURCE SHARING

1

Sharing of resources assumes that
there is 'idle or spare capacity' of the
resource.
SOME IMPORTANT ASSUMPTIONS OF RESOURCE SHARING

2. Resource sharing assumes underutilization
of resources and intends to maximize use of
scarce resources.
SOME IMPORTANT ASSUMPTIONS OF RESOURCE SHARING

3. Resource sharing assumes that needs of users is
increasingly diverse, interdisciplinary and ever
expanding and hence improved or enhanced
access to needed.
SOME IMPORTANT ASSUMPTIONS OF RESOURCE SHARING

4. It is also assumed by resource sharing philosophy
that new technologies open up new avenues for
cooperation and resource sharing and offer greater
staff specialization, better overall performance,
better or additional service and greater user
satisfaction.

Tips for Effective Resource Sharing
Tips for Effective Resource Sharing

(1)

Make adequate preparatory study and

analysis with clear objectives.
(2)

Good planning, a continuing education
programme for staff and a well conceived
organizational structure should be
provided.
Tips for Effective Resource Sharing

(3)

Ensure technical compatibility
between participating institutions.

(4) Adequate arrangements for monitoring
services and for responding to the
feedback information thus received need
to be made.
Tips for Effective Resource Sharing

(5) Ensure good transport and communication
facilities.
(6)

Resource sharing cost money and does not
bring benefit immediately
Tips for Effective Resource Sharing and Library Cooperation

(7)
Those most capable of keeping agreements
should be involved so that `reliance' on other
libraries acceptable both conceptually and actually
acceptable.
Tips for Effective Resource Sharing

(8)
Representatives of management, libraries
and document selection officers should meet
together to divide up the work in a manner that
allows them to individually continue to collect that
which is most critical but collectively broadens the
intake of materials.
Tips for Effective Resource Sharing and Library Cooperation

(9) Improve the document delivery to an
`acceptable speed'.
